Servos - speed or torque?

I'm thinking of upgrading my steering servo and I've been looking at a lot of specs. My question is which of the two ratings are more important, speed or torque?

Also, any suggestions about what to buy? I'd like to keep it around $75...

I would get the fastest servo you can afford with at least 175oz of torque for buggy and at least 200oz for truggy. You can get by with much less but if you are buying a servo get a good one. Electronics is one place you should not skimp on. The AE 1015 is a good servo for close to your price range.

jamminnay 01-09-2009 04:31 AM

the 1015 is a good servo and it would be right around your price range

yeaklet4 01-09-2009 04:34 AM

how about the ace 1013 it has 173 oz and anyone run that for 1/8 buggy how did ya like it

yeaklet4 01-09-2009 04:35 AM

ultimate hobbies has the ace 1013 for 64.99

Hobbico CS-170 has great specs at a lower price. It has Titanium gears, it's essentially the exact same servo as the Hitec HS-5955TG.

Serge HC 01-09-2009 05:18 AM

I've got the 1015 from aces and they are speedy, torky and they keep center very well.

Good choice.

JamisonWorkshop 01-09-2009 06:05 AM

I have been running the Hobbico CS-150 in all of my RC's crawlers and buggies. 200 oz. of torque only $40.

Have not had any problems with them at all. Great buy.

malik 01-09-2009 06:51 AM

The 1013 will be fine, I run the Hobbico CS-170 steering and the CS-160 throttle. I think the CS-150 is alittle slow for a steering servo in buggy but truggy you could get away with it.

I don't know why anyone would ever buy anything but a Hitec servo ... two year guarantee, and the one time I did have to send a couple in, they fixed them and shipped them back within a week (no charge).

They also seem as durable as hell ... we have a couple that are almost three years old, and still kicking ...

SeR_Cyclops 01-09-2009 05:52 PM

what do you all think about the Hitech 645 MG servo?

Great servo

infanterene 01-09-2009 06:13 PM

Hitecs down center as well as JR's or KO's but they are cheaper. JR also has a 2 or 3 year warranty also.

losi_racer 01-09-2009 06:20 PM

i use jr and hitec. Both are great servos

slaytanic 01-09-2009 06:22 PM

IMO the 645's are junk. I have 3 broken ones in my box. They work okay they just are too fragile for me.

I tried one in my savage,no good. But they say it is the best up grade servo for my losi mini rock crawler.

You mean the DS1313, there's no DS1013. I love the DS1313 on my throttle/brake, but are also great for steering with the amount of torque and speed it has. And on top of that it's only $73 at Amainhobbies. Ace are the best servos out there IMO for the price.

bgbelden 01-09-2009 08:32 PM

Hitec and Jr both have great customer service and i'm currently running (2) 5955tg in my buggy one is a week old the other over a year and i'm rough on stuff.

pwnzor 01-09-2009 08:43 PM

Futaba s9351 plenty fast with more than enough torque .13/192oz @ 6v

Black 01-09-2009 09:40 PM

I am a very twitchy driver and like fast servos so I run JR 9100s servos.
180oz/.07sec. Great servos and you can get them for $90 from tiltedrc.com when they run specials. Well worth the coin along with a 3year warranty and awesome customer service!

assivaen 01-09-2009 10:40 PM

i was actually gonna post a similar thread. i am looking to upgrade a bunch of my cars...
can someone tell me the recommended torque for steering, throttle on a buggy, truggy and 1/10 scale?

thanks

G

nover367 01-09-2009 10:43 PM

look at ace servo's they last forever have a high grade of torque and are fast as all hell

Thanks for the replies.... based on the specs I've been looking at I'll probably try the Ace/Associated 1313's. They seem to have the best blend of speed/torque at a reasonable price.

Interestingly, nobody took a stab at my original question. Which is more important, speed or torque? I'd still like to hear some opinions.

yeaklet4 01-10-2009 11:15 AM

well i just got me xp 1313 today for the 1/8 bugggy

PTP Racing 01-10-2009 01:52 PM

Torque is more important because without the power you wont get the speed.

v1r killer 01-12-2009 12:43 AM

what is the max volt that you can run thru a servo i have ace 1015 x 2 as i just got a dx3r controller and they will run upto 9.6v so i was thinking can i run my servoes at lipo 7.4 voltage or do i still require a regulator just for the servoes??:batman:

cheesecake 01-12-2009 12:47 AM

Here is a tip for newer drivers DO NOT GET THE FASTEST SERVO YOU CAN.......
its a waste and 9 times out of 10 it will be to fast for you and make your driving inconsistent and twitchy get something in the .13 to .15 range and you will be good you dont need a .06 servo because its to fast for you in a race situation

asw7576 01-12-2009 01:07 AM

Torque !
