Wheel Balancing
#46
to properly balance rims you need a magnet balancer for airplane prop's...as its Alot more accurate as apposed to a Bearing style....if you dont want to balance the rims just mount up the tires....glue them then run them for a quali or warmup to make sure the foams are seated where they want to be....then you can balance...its an important step often Overlooked...ive had the heavy side walk a couple time's on different tires.

Question, I have 6 sets of new buggy tires I balanced and when I put them in the balancer and find the heavy side I mark the top(light) side and put some weight (duct seal) there. Then I spin the wheel and add or subtract as needed. I know it's not suppose to stop in the samr place to be balanced, but mine almost always stop at what would be the 9 or 3 o'clock position! What do I need to do?

balanced wheel has to stop randomly. if it stops at the same place you need to continue balancing

My wheels will sit at Any position i set them at.....so i would try again like how i do mine and see if there's a difference...whats duct seal ? the tin tape ? for sealing air ducts ? WAY too thin if so and there's No weight to it...you need lead tape.

always mark and add to the light side. and as you can see i stretch the weight out...not all in 1 spot...as that will just create another heavy spot opposite to the 1 your trying to fix....this is another reason i like the tape over the putty...you can evenly distribute it...unlike the putty

The yes is a very long and lengthy conversation about dynamic balance. What we do with RC's is only static balance. The balance machines that 1:1 cars use can also detect the angle of unbalance, hence why you may find weights placed on the inside and/or outside of the rim.
That said, it's not really practical in RC's. Contrary to what you see and hear, a good percentage of pros don't really even bother static balancing their wheels/tires as it is.
The main concern with sticking clay on the wheels should be longevity. Keep in mind even something as simple as washing your tires can affect the clay, as the clay putty absorbs the moisture and now you've just thrown off your balance!
------
If I ever balance wheels/tires (which I haven't done in a long time), I stick the clay in the corner against the rim/dish, then add a drop of super glue/CA glue to coat the entire clay. It'll keep it in place and almost 'seals' the clay.

FWIW i have a dynamite 1/8 tire balancer that i put ceramic bearings in and after reading here about balancing the wheel first i tried it and the bearings had to much resistance to do the wheels. what i did was take seal off sprayed them out and relubed with slick 50 spray and now i can balance the wheels. they rock back and forth 8-11 times always landing in the same spot.
