Basically what is the general consensus that everyone has came upon?
At the death of engine's compression (8~10gals)?
1mm worth of play (back and forth)? Perhaps 2mm?

The play would remain the same, but if you notice the drive cups only wear on the side driving your car/truck forward. By switching the drive cups, frontto rear or left to right, you have a nice straight edge on the forward drive side. This is only to get a little more life out of a drive cup. If you clean and rebuild your diffs regularly it only takes a few minutes to switch the cups.
