My traveling 1/8th box has:
Pink Megabytes

Hard, Yes HARD, Gridirons.
Soft Ibeams
Soft p1's
Clay or SS Typo's

That should cover all surfaces. And it's not wasteful, because you always need tires.
When do you use hard grids?

is the p1 similar to a holeshot?

I don't have too much experience with the p1's, but I'd use them or Megaytes instead of Holeshots. They're the hot tire for many lately.

In motorcross, you can use hard tires to bite into soft wet tracks. Knobs on soft tires just flex over and won't dig in. That's where I use hard or medium Gridirons. If they over water, again, before my run.

Penitas RV track.. Penitas, Texas..... 10 miles west of McAllen.
big track... Stock short course truck.. ( 17.5 ) average 50 seconds per lap..
mod is in the lower 40's...

in fact Garry.. broke the record today.. 41.6 seconds. that's 2 wheel drive... in the "A" main.
how do you keep the mud from sticking to the tires... they watered the track... we were first out...
tires became mud balls..

the main's were the same way..

Chuck there is no way to keep it from collecting mud. You can try spraying them down with WD-40 but that only works for a while. I've never been to that track. You are WAY South right at the border. I can guess that to might have a hard pack dusty track when not watered though. Loose will be a track thats has a good bit of sand or is more like your average dirt track. Hard pack has more clay in it and outdoors they tend to get dusty.

Not sure if this video was posted, but a good informative video on gluing tires.
