Default More speed

buggy = x1cr
engine = Max Power M5B
diff spur gear = stock 48t ???
clutch bell = 13t
pipe = Max Power 2017 pipe

Ok. what i want is more top end speed from my buggy. Though the engine is probably not running at 100% please don't take that into consideration for this thread as i don't think it will get me the speed i want.

The engine is running sweet, quick accelleration, very good fuel consumption 9mins, quick but not fast topend.

Now i have a carb restrictor in place, but have been told that removing that won't help me get the top end i need and i should change my gearing.

I'm sure with the carb restrictor in place i will still get my driveability, but i need and want more top end to reduce my lap times as i race on a fast track.

So should i change the 13t bell to a 14t bell, or change my spur gear down to the next size. 48 to 46.??

thanks in advance.

What kind of pipe do you have on your engine?

The pipe is one of the things that can impact this.

just done a search on the pipe i have. it's made for bottom - mid range power.

if i bought a JP-2 or JP-4 would it really make that much difference to the cars top end performance that would be noticable over the current pipe.

or would i just be better to swap to the 14t clutch bell.

what will give me better results? local web page is www.rockyrc.net pictures of the track can be found on the "About" page

If you already own the 14t clutch bell I would try that first as it would be free, it should make a noticable difference but I can't guarantee you'll be satisfied as it won't be the HUGE difference it sounds like you are going for.

try the 14T bell, and feel for a drop in acceleration, if you don't notice decreased acceleration, try a 15T, until you get the best top end vs bottom end. and correct me if i'm wrong but isn't a 13T bell rather small for a buggy?

imo i would try a 46t spur you will gain a little top end without sacrificing much bottem end if you go up on your bell you will gain even more top but you will loose more bottom also 2 teeth on your spur isn't as big a step as 1 tooth on your bell

i am racing. it was just annoying when going down the straight i would keep up with the car for the first 1/2, then the next 1/4 they would pull a few metres on me before the braking zone.

the speed toped out 1/2 way down the straight when other cars kept going.

q. if the engine is running cool.. will leaning out the top end needle (1 or 2 hours) help with top end speed???

it does appear that the pipe i have us made for bottom - mid range.. would changing this to a JP4 or equivelent pipe make a difference in power/speed.

I could always sell you a faster motor if you wish..I have modified Picco/JPX .21's that are extremely fast motors... pretty much nothing short of a high end brushless will be able to touch you down the straight with one of these engines installed.. ....they get good runtime as well, especially considering the power output they have......

2 questions:
Whats the temp of the engine coming off the track at? Below 210 degrees?
Is it producing smoke?

If both answers are yes, then feel free to lean it out a few hours on top... Until you feel it is performing well enough while still producing smoke... Thats the key... If its smoking then you are not too lean.

Too lean = Blown engine!

i would just put a 14 tooth on it, it wont take away to much bottom, and will help with the top end, i run 13 tooth with 48 spur on my car and i am happy with the top end i have, i am running a speed with 2060, most races are not won on the straight away anyways

Proper tune and the right pipe will make a world of difference. Thats what I would do first. Gearing changes will only try to make up for a lack of set up somewhere else. Not to say a gear change shouldn't be don e. Just make sure you are running right and with the right pipe first.
