Yup those are the best on the market. Sometimes you can get them on ebay for less than $200 used.

I know its painful. And even at that if you put 2 side by side the reading will be different.

I use mine to get close and then just use the spit test. If its not boiling its good.

I have a Raytek.

icemandolmite 06-24-2008 05:31 PM

Fluke. One of the best names in the industry.

http://www.newark.com/productimages/...rd/4128767.jpg

Manufacturer Part No: FLUKE-62

100$ almost everywhere online (Newark, Digikey, Allied Electronics, etc)

This is more or less (maybe exactly???) the same as the exergen...only its yellow and wont get lost!:nod:

Your eyes and ears are the best temp gun, and they're FREE! :)
Seriously, keep an eye on the smoke coming from the engine at all throttle levels, but most importantly, at the end of a straight. Is smoke still visible? Also, when you let off to take that turn, can you hear the engine? Does it drop down to a clean idle or does it wind on? When you get back on throttle, is there a good puff of smoke? Can you feel a smooth transition from low input to high. Learn to tune by sight and sound.
All that being said, I do still use a gun, but only to be sure I'm safely in the ball park. PE2, Ofna, Axial and several others make models that are in the price range you seek, $20-$40ish, and are perfect for this method. :)
