Hey racers! Just fixing up my new buggy and being out of the offroad scene for a while I was wondering what type of shoes is everyone using? I recall some saying aluminum grabs harder, less slippage, but harder on the clutchbell. Regardless of the pros and cons a regular 3 shoe setup with 1.0 or 1.1 springs is sufficient no? Figure for now going to use the alum kyosho shoes with the 1.0 springs. Also, the 1.1 will make the shoes grab later, right? (And) would be best to use them on a high traction track?

Use aluminum shoes with 1.0 springs.

If the track is slippery and you need softer engagement, then carbon shoes with 1.0, .95 or .90 springs. The smaller the springs, the earlier they come in and the carbons slip a bit, so you won't wheel spin. Use aluminum with 1.1 when you need more bottom end hit for clearing jumps. It will come on harder and later in the RPM band with more power.

I've always used carbon shoes and had good results (with 1.0mm springs). There are some newer aluminum composite shoes on the market like Dynamite Max Life shoes that appear to offer the best of both types too.

I've recently tried the aluminum long lifes with a hardend bell and like it so far.

All great responses, thanks guys. I already have the Alum shoes (kyosho) with 1.0 springs and will try them out. Regardless I will purchase the carbon shoes being sometimes the track is hard and compact at the moment.

When you change from aluminum to carbon shoes make sure to use a new clutch bell or sand out the inside of the old bell. Aluminum shoes (when all 3 shoes are aluminum) coat the inside of the bell with deposits that will dramatically shorten the life of a set of carbon shoes if not removed.
