1/8ths scales can be tuned to fit your driving style. The best thing to do is run what most of the people at the track run. This way there should be lots of help available on setup information and such.

if someone does let you run their car, just dont be a jerk about it, dont do any of the big jumps or anything, your just trying to get a feel for it, not trying to set the track record or anything, I generally would let anyone try my stuff as well, personally I think you would probally be happier with the Mugen, its generally an easier and more forgiving car to get dialed in than the xray I think,

I appreciate all of your helpful advice!!!... I will definately become a regular on this forum once I get the buggy kit 'cause that's when all the 'crazy fun' starts, right?? haha

I definately want to get the full appreciation of the sport by 'building' from the ground up....

Thanx Mugen MBX-5 for the recommended tools list...I will go out and purchase those before I start anything! ps: the Fox for $1K sounds like a good deal...did you buy it??? havent seen the giant glory yet---I've been diverting most of my research towards rc...and staying out of the bike shops! hahaha

For the radio...AirTronics or Ko Propo seem to be pretty good...From what I read, the servos and radio are places one should NOT skimp on....So any recommendations?

I have ben in this for a little while and I cars that I don't use anymore so last year I went thouh everything I own and got it working and I bring everything to the track(helps I pull a trailer) I noticed these kids always showed up and watched and some would help corner, so before the mains there would be a break I would fire up a buggy or 2 and hand them over and after that it was like I had a bunch of slaves, ofther drivers saw this and they bought cars and it became a race in the race.
We talked to the lhs last fall and he is going to put up a xtm buggy rtr and we are going to have a race this year where we supply a buggy and pit for someone that signs up for this and the winner will will get the buggy and he will give out some more door prizes. This will bring more people to ur track we have seen it help here.
and just think if u finish in the bottom of the B main now and u only have a A and B u feel bad but if u finish in the bottom of a B main and there is all the way to a D then u will go home thinking how many people u beat!

Yes i have to agree,Got some friend's that ask to drive my buggy,Mugen with 3PK and RB motor.

I suggest you get something small and NOT! Nitro.
Noobs should always get a electric first.

I think that you should look into a used Mini before buying a new one,Buy it and just play with it and see if you even enjoy-like the hobby before you go empty your pocket's.

and no i didnt buy it, it was 3 hours away and i didnt have 1000$ or else i would have bought 2!!

That sounds like an awesome promotional idea at your track! Sure wish I was in WI....

Since I tend to be ambitious in personality, it's better that I start with the nitros because when I get to the point where I want 'more'...hopefully there's not TOO much more to have!!! hahahaha

I like the nitro 'community' because it seems like you guys are very serious and technical, yet helpful and have other skills outside of RC....that's very impressive!

See if your lhs stocks parts for the buggy your going to be driving.....A lot of new comers tend to break a lot of parts before they get the hang of it....If you break a part and your lhs doesn`t have it,it can be a real drag for a noob.If you plan on ordering online and a lot of extra parts when you do you might not have this problem.....If you do have to order your stuff online ask around about what parts you break the most for your buggy so you can stock up......

Of the 2 you have listed, both are absolutely GREAT cars. I started with a cheap RTR (ready-to-replace) and would advise you to stay away from that route.

The Mugen is a little more stable and forgiving than the XRay. The XRay is slightly higher in parts quality and durability from a WEAR perspective, but both are tough buggies. I've owned and raced a Mugen, and driven my buddie's XRay. I now have a Losi 8ight.

Actually with my friend's setup on his XRay it was MORE twitchy and "tail happy" than my Losi, and that was even with weight added to the rear to tame it down. He likes to say "it comes with ice dispensers in front of the rear wheels."

That is NOT to say it isn't a great car... it is probably THE best quality made, period. It is also SMOKING fast in the hands of the right driver. However, it might not be the best choice for a beginner.

The Mugen on the other hand, isn't a tail-happy beast by nature. It is much more relaxed and forgiving to drive, but it also doesn't have the steering of some of the other buggies. It tends to "push" in the corners a bit. (That is partly what makes it so forgiving.)

In my personal opinion, there is not a better beginner car made than an MBX5 (or MBX5 ProSpec, or MBX5R) AND it is still a competitive car in the hands of the right driver.
