Associated, Losi, OFNA, Mugen and a bunch of others make very good race cars. What it comes down to is.....
1. Parts availability - What mfg. parts does your local hobby shop carry? It doesn't matter how good a vehicle you have, if you can't get replacement parts quickly, you'll be a spectator.
2.Buying the best buggy your budget allows. I don't see anything wrong with a RTR to get started with. But you might have a problem with the size of engines that come with some of them. Most places won't care if your running a .26 or .28 when your just starting out, but if you get better and start beating everyone, then expect to have to buy a .21 in addition, you'll need to upgrade the steering servo on most RTR's.
3.What cars do your local guys run?? Having the same vehicle as your racing buddies other local racers will help with set-ups or if you need a part in an emergency.
This list could be longer, but these are probably the most important things when it comes to buying a vehicle, IMO.
