Default Gearing question.

My XMaxx is stock 15/54 gearing. I want to run 22/50. I don't have a 50 tooth spur on hand, but I do have an 18 tooth pinion. The gearing chart under the motor has pins to place, for proper mesh when you change gearing. If I run an 18/54 the pins are in the same spot as 22/50, I , . So will 18/54 be basically the same speed as 22/50?
Thanks,
Trout

Trout,

I don't have an X-Maxx so I'm not completely sure about the pins you speak of. It sounds like the pins act as stakes to ensure proper gear mesh at discreet spur/pinion gear ratios.

But to answer your question, the 50:22 wil have the higher top speed over the 54:18.

22/50 will be a completely different beast than 18/54. I'm running 21/50 with the Max6 ESC and compared to 18/54, it's so much faster on the top end. Didn't notice a difference in low end (I'm not super picky about low end torque), but I'm loving 21/50. Although 20/50 would be the sweet spot for Texas summers if running in grass.

Enjoy it either way, as 18/54 will still be a huge improvement over stock.

Simply divide the teeth on the spur gear by the number of teeth on the pinion. 15/54 = 3.6:1, 18/54 = 3:1, and 22/50 = 2.27:1 ratios. Want to find the equivalent to 22/50 with a 54t spur? Well 22/50 is 2.27:1 so take 54t, divide by 2.27 and you get 23.7 so round up to 24t. That's the closest you'll get to 2.27:1 with a 54t spur.

The gearing chart for the motor mount is only concerned with the distance between the motor shaft and the spur gear shaft. Within that distance are many combinations of different size gears, all yielding different ratios.

Thanks all. Appreciate it. Well 18/54 was fun. After 6 months stock, it was a whole new truck. 20/50 should be about all I need. Really wakes it up. Don't see a need for 8s and all the gear, just put dual fans on it and gear it up, so much more fun, what it should be.
Thanks again,
Trout
