Muggy Electronics
Hey all, I've been back and forth and back again on combos for my muggy both in general but more recently for the snow. I want to be able to drive on the crusty stuff where minimal "wetness" will really hit the controller and have it drinking water, but there's always the chance of a puddle now and then which is what scares me.
My set up options consist of a Hobbywing xerun 150a, mm2 and an xl2. The motor is and will remain a 1717. What's curious is that I'm making my lipos hurt pretty bad no matter what I do, even in the dry snow. They're going upwards of 100 degrees f and that scares me some. These are big 60c heli 6s packs and are next to new, so that can't be it. Castle did advise bumping up to 200a plugs which seems to have -if anything- made the esc and motor even hotter. In regards to the esc and motor, I typically run the xl2 in the summer and would like to during the winter, but the motor sure does get hotter than I'd like with the xl2 turned up to 200 amps(what castle said to do). The gearing is 17/45, and for a 1717 I thought that was fair, but I plan to reduce that to about 12/45. So....since i seem to be turning everything down on the xl2, do I just: -run the mm2 or xerun in the snow and change battery connectors on the lipos down to traxxas or deans connectors.... Or -turn down the xl2 and liquid tape the crap out of it? Any other thoughts on the heat issues would be appreciated as well, I know its a bit of a mouthful.....! |
Once you gear down all the heat problems should go away.

17/45 on 6s is about 60mph with a 6" tire before you factor in any tire ballooning. The 1717 in my LST is fine geared for a theoretical 55mph (taped tires). I haven't tried gearing for more speed but I can tell it's not going to like much more so I'm going to say asking for 60+mph is too much. Motor and battery getting hot equals too much gearing anyway so try the smaller pinion.
If it's not too much trouble I'd switch out the XL2 for the MM2. You have the MM2, it can take the 1717 and is already waterproof. Just my opinion. |
Oddly enough, the xl2 does give more power. It's distinctly notcable. I'll try gearing down and see how it goes. I really see no why waterproofing it should be a prob....it's no different from anything else, but I'm sure it can handle the crunchy snow out there without the coating.....might do it anyways just to be safe

The XL2 with its larger circuit board traces, greater number of FET's and possibly higher quality FET's must pose less of a restriction than the MMM for that to be the case. I always assumed the point where an esc becomes a bottleneck is the point it goes into meltdown.
