New To Nitro Please Help

I am started to look into getting a nitro 4x4 offroad truck, and I was wondering what was good. Im only 14 so I dont have a lot of money and i want something under $400. I read the name T-Maxx everywhere and I read about it, it seems pretty good but is there anything better. Also I want it to be fast cause I know kids who often times have races with street cars and I
would like somethin that can be slammed around and possibly keep up on the roads but Im not worried about street races as much as I'd like to offroad.

www.towerhobbies.com and you can look at lots of trucks..
The T-Maxx is good but is older model, it came out back in the day. Now Traxxas makes the REVO which is what lots of people use..but if your just going to play around I would suggest you look at the HPI Savage or the Team Associated MGT.

Tower Hobbies sells the 1/8 RTR .25 Savage for $350 because of their savings deal. The Savage is bigger then the 1/10 Tmaxx and could probably take more of a beating. From what i've heard the Tmaxx is a money pit. Parts breaking left, right and center.

well, i have a t-maxx and a savage, and i would say that the maxx is faster, and more user friendly than the savage. you can modify the suspension more easily, and it is great for off roading through 5 inch tall grass, and on the road, but it is more unstable on the road than off. i find it hard to keep my own maxx in a straight line, but it goes faster than i will ever need. be careful with turns, for it spins easily. i, unfortunately, bought my maxx when it first came out, which cost me 500$ plus the additional things, but now they are like, 350$? Overall, the T - maxx is a great truck for the biginer ( it was my first serious rc truck) it is durable, but dont push it too hard. if you buy it, or anything else, just watch out for ...
MAILBOXES , OTHER CARS, AND YOURSELF!!! LOL . i wasnt paying attention, and hit myself with my maxx, and it hurt!!!

happy racing/driving!!! :)

I have an XTM X FACTOR. I picked it up used for 190. It has a hyper.21 8 port race engine in it. The only thing it needed was the diffs shimmed. But the truck rips. Only other problem i have with it is keeping the front end on the ground. One cool think about the truck is that you can make it 4 wheel steering. I will look into that later but check it out.

If you are new to Nitro I would go with a TNX. I am new to nitro too and this car is already built for you and ready to run. Not to mention it pretty much blows away the competition from stock setup. I love mine and couldn't be happier.

:D :D To be honest, there's so many classes to choose from these days, it can br hard to make a choice. I've owned both T-maxx's and a savage, and my savage is the only one still alive after 2 years of SERIOUS off road abuse. However, it will only keep up on-road with some serious money thrown at it.There are others to consider. How about a 1/10 scale, 2wd stadium truck? the hpi rush evo is great, and it can easily keep up with some 2 speed on road cars. There's the hpi mitro mt2, 4wd 1/10 monster truck. Both of those are around £200 in the uk. Again, if you want bigger, there's the savage 4.6 now at around $400 i think in the states, or the Traxxas Revo. They seem to be gaining popularity these days, and can keep up with my tuned up savge.
At the end of the day, the choice is yours, but whatever you decide, welcome to nitro, and we're all here to help if we can!! :D

starting out i would say go with the savage very durable..tmaxx has quiet a few weak points in stock form.bulkheads to mention one

roadbuster 10-18-2005 12:29 AM

can go for either TNX or Savage.
TNX is a fast racing truck while Savage is a good basher.
Hence, it voice down to what do you want.

Revo is a nice looking truck...but may be complicated for starters.

Any truck you choose, make sure your neighbourhood hobby shops carry in the spares for easy maintenance.

i would go with a savage if you are looking for a bashin truck

mr-e-maxx 10-19-2005 11:33 PM

I have been in this hobby for over twenty years and right now I would have to agree with Tboner. The TNX is a very tough truck it has a very simple and uncludered layout it would be the easyest truck to work on for someone new to the hobby, also it will beat just about any RTR out of the box on the track. The Savage is a very tough truck also but just not for the newbee's and to make one a decent racer you have to throw a good amount of money into it. Plus if you shop around you can pick up a TNX for about $350.00 or so.

I would not go for a savage as they can be a real pig to work I have had two of them in the past and sold them both, not because things went wrong all the time but if something did go on it it was a real pain to work on. I have always thought that the tnx looked a bit cheap and thats what has put me of them but the ones I have actually seen go are really good and the layout is soooo simple on them. I don't know how much the Thunder Tiger MTA4 .28 is over there but in the UK the rrp is £60 cheaper than the Savage .25 and they are great trucks. Bigger than a savage, great for bashing and easy to work on and with a .28 in it they are quick too. I have one and I have been really pleased with it.
If you want something quick and agile then go for the TNX if you want a big brusier go for a MTA4.

nitrorevoguy 10-20-2005 03:50 PM

you can easily find a revo on ebay or craigs list for under 400.00 with exstras and mabe even with hop ups

team-dgm 10-21-2005 01:46 AM

If you can get a revo for that money then do it, I love mine. Its the best truck I have had.
