saving tires

What is the best way to get tires off the rim?

Soak them in acetone if your rims aren't plastic.

what will acetone do to plastic rims?

Debonder

I use debonder, you can buy it from your LHS and it works well...If I am not saving the tires then I just cut them off as close as possible to them rim with a hobby knife and use my dremel with a wire wheel to buff off the remaining rubber...Acetone or paint remover will actually melt the rimes...

You can boil the assembly to break the glue bond, or you can heat them in an oven to do the same thing. Boiling is kinda messy and you risk getting burned by the water or hot parts. baking will make the next 3 or 4 things you cook in your oven taste like rubber and you also risk burns from the hot parts. I tried debonder and it took better than a week of application to get anywhere. Soaking in acetone will do the job and is OK for some plastic wheels, but it will ruin the foams and will eat chrome plating right off.

Acetone will eat plastic rims but not nylon rims.
