Default esc over heating problem on savage flux xl - 1717

Hey guys im still having this over heating problem on my mmm esc with 1717. First i thought i was under geared so i geared it up to 60mph and still my esc starts over heating my motor is fine 100-110 degrees-esc 140-150 degrees. I doubt im over geared or else my motor or else my motor would be hot to. I have a bec hooked up too and running 6s and if their were binding my motor would be hot . Any suggestions would help. Thanks

Even 60mph is overgeared in my book..should be around 40mph..mine is and never gets hot..I'm running a hobbywing esc but 60mph would cook any esc

Is there a way to reduce the amps it draws, or any solution. Because i dnt want buy a $160-$200 esc wen this mmm should work fine, what if i increase the voltage on the bec. Mine on default settings. Also my uncle has the same setup but for the lst2, geared for 53-55mph, little hevier then mine and runs amazing, and he runs it hard

Check the pinion and spur mesh..sounds like its meshed too tight..there has to be a little hint of play..too tight and you'll make motor and esc get hot..alternatively borrow a 150a esc like a hobbywing and see how you go..I have a hw 150a and castle 1717 in my heavy xxl and after a good thrashing, is only slightly warm..I'm running 24/63 gears which puts me around 40mph..no need for anything more

Is the esc brand new or used? Run it through mud or anything? My point is the esc will collect crap inside the case and some cooling may be blocked. Open the case, dump the junk, use a brush off the heatsink and put it back together. Sometimes you get an esc that runs a little hotter. I had an MMM that would kick the fan on (150f is when they come on) all the time in a buggy geared for 45mph. The MMM in my 1717 powered LST XXL never comes on and it's geared for almost 50mph on 5s. 140-150 at the end of a run isn't the end of the world for the esc either.

You did disconnect the red wire in the esc's servo lead when running the external Bec right? As for external Bec output voltage, run it as high as your Rx and servos will allow. If your unsure what they can take set it at 6.2 volts, default is 5.1 volts by the way.

I bought the esc brand new for my e revo and only ran 4s then i put it in my savage cause the original one burned up so i sent it in, and yes i did cut the red wire.. also when i got those temps it wasnt at the end of the run, it got to those temps mabe 5 min while my uncle was zipping by with his. After all this i let it cool down drive it home, all the way there i was hitting the throttle very lightly and breaking and wen i got to the house the fan kicked in and temps at 130. Only about 100ft from my house.

Running hotter is one thing, getting to 130F in a few minutes of light throttle doesn't sound right. Try swapping esc's with your uncle just to verify its really your esc. How's your Lipos? Getting warm or hot at all?

My batteries are fine and the soldering joints are too. Id think my uncle is going to let me take his esc and put it on mine because he has it all wired nicely but i just realized that my ESC just got back today from hpi a brand new one so im going to try this one out mabe tomarrow after i get it all wired up and see if it was my esc but if not im not sure wat im going to do

Definitely check you're meshing if the gears and see if anything else is binding within the drivetrain..check wheel bearings too, you never know if one or more are stuffed..
One other thing, check to see if you're throttle EPA settings aren't too far advanced..

Love the castle 1717, just took my xxl out today , every time I drive it I get a grin from ear to ear..it's the best brushless motor by far, nothing comes close!!
It has got so much torque that it can flip it at any speed

140-150 degrees is NOT overheating the ESC . You are worrying about nothing IMO ......Thermal protection doesnt even kick in till near 200 degrees ......

not true, my flux xl with 12/46 (center diff) ran 60mph with no heat issues. Its all about gearing and wheels. If you have proper gearing but heavy wheels then that will cause over heating. IMO 20/44 gearing stock gt2 wheels is a great setup. But if over heating is an issue, one should look at the C rating on the batteries, Also the connections to the esc and batteries. If all good drop a tooth or two on the pinion and see what happens.

Oh I agree. But its a little suspicious to get to 130f in a couple minutes with light throttle and what amount amounts to walking with the truck. Can't blame him for worrying a bit since a similar setup truck runs cooler too. Really gotta see if the fan can keep the temps within reason though.
