Default Traxxas Summit VXL or Not? for my son

He is only 3 but is showing interest. How slow can I make the standard titan 12T or VLX units with gearing and programming?

I like the VXL for the better radio and electronics but worry I will not be able to slow it down enough. I looking for crawler speed or a bit faster. nothing more for starting out. I figure with the LHS support on traxxas stuff he could have this truck for awhile.

Thanks Guys
Tony

Edit ..1/16 mini summit... sorry guys

Are you looking at the 1/8th scale or 1/16th scale summit?

My son is 3 and a half, he started at 2 with a Tamiya Holiday Buggy (which didn't last) then I went the Summit 1/16 VXL (Didn't last either, kids like to go full throttle when stuck and the diffs took a pounding) and now he has a Rustler VXL which is on Training Mode and it's reliable, plus he loves getting some air on it.

you are better off with the vxl and just put it in training mode and why go from a rusty vxl to a summit vxl

All of the current traxxas models with Traxxas electronics have the 50% power training mode which really tames the cars nicely. For a kid that age I would recommend one of the 2wd Slash/Stampede/Rustler/Bandit models since they are cheap to own and operate and are nearly indestructable at the speeds the brushed Titan 12t motor can muster.

Spot on! The Summit VXL I had to do 3 diffs in 5 months, the Rustler I have only had to replace one rear hub carrier which is a 5 minute job.

Sorry. Yes I was thinking the mini summit 1/16 scale.
I'm not looking for a pavement pounder. More like a couch crawler for the house or something he can run inside the house this winter. Some sort of mini. Coming from racing 5 years ago I don't really have a good opinion of Traxxas. However I see the hobby store support is just amazing for traxxas stuff. Which will be a big plus for a kids toy.

Out of the minis what do you like? I like MTs for bashing so the mini summit and other small Monsters are appealing to me. Do they make diff upgrades for the summit?

OK from the pictures I can find and the PDF files on traxxas.com I think I have some gearing ideas.
#7205 summit titan 12t is geared 25/55
#7207 summit VXL is geared 16/50
#7009 slash VXL is geared 31/45

Looking at the pictures the titan 12t motor combo is maxed out for gearing to go any lower in gear ration(mathematically higher) because of gear box and clearance issues.
The summit vxl looks to have the best options for gearing. It is starting in the middle of the gearing options with room to move up or down in gearing. The stock 16/50 is a 3.1 ratio. It looks like I can go to a 13/55 with out much problems. The will be a 4.2 ratio. About 30% slower then add the vxl 50% training mode..... that should take it down to under 10mph easily.
That should prove to be a good speed in the house. My only consern is how well the slipper works to save the diffs and drive shafts.

Thank you for any additional input.
Tony

If you were to go with one that has a xl2.5 or a larger truck with a xl5 or vxl you can always lower the voltage. Those can go down to a 4.8v nimh pack. However the vxl-3m speed control only goes down to a 7.2v pack. So that would be an option if you cant gear it low enough.

Well if he wants to crawl, the summit will get you over more things. The revo is more onroad IMO..

Only the pinion and spur are different correct? From what I can tell the diffs and transmission and the same. But I could be wrong.

I have a set of summit wheels, tires and body coming also. The suspension itself should just be an adjustment correct? I have never felt with the push rod rocker suspension

well if you get the long travel rockers, you will have the suspension of a summit. The revo is truly a summit once you swap the body, wheels, arms, driveshafts, bumpers, and body posts..
