HPI Savage engine(s) question (:
Hey, I just bought an HPI Savage X 4.6 off of Ebay.
It has the LRP Z.28R Spec 3 engine in it.
Ultimately I'd like to know how the two compare and if the aftermarket one is better?
Also, does the 4.6 engine have another name I can search by?
Thanks =]

lrp z28r spec 3 is the better one. regardless if one is better than the other, its how you tune, watch the temps and take care of the engine is more important.

The lrp motor is better, and the stock motor is called the F4.6. Both are good motors but the lrp has more power. However it costs more, about $50 more. The lrp is a $170 motor and the F4.6 you can get on ebay for $120.

He just responded to me and said that it's a Savage 25. . I guess I was really wrong in guessing it was the 4.6. . I'm guessing the LRP is much larger than the stock engine?
Also, Thanks for your replies. I appreciate the info!

No need to spend $170 on an LRP. Get a Losi 454(exact same engine) on ebay for cheaper, or a Dynamite Big Red .28(very similar - modded LRP Spec 2 basically..) from amain for $130.
If you're getting a Savage 25 your first priority should be upgrading the drivetrain, diffs, etc.. A decent .28 will wreak havoc on old Savage diffs.

I have already got the Savage 25 with the LRP engine installed.
He also said that almost everything on the car isn't stock. Hopfully soon I'll be able to have the knowledge to know what upgraded parts look like compared to the stock ones!

best to find out from previous owner, beside the LRP engine, what else has he upgraded and using what. ie..if previous owner has already upgraded the diff to bullet proof diff, then you know that you may not need to upgrade that already or just replace that part with the same one when it gets busted...bad example tho but i think you know what i mean.

When you get the truck i would take it apart and check some things over. I would highly recommend taking the 2 speed apart and checking the second gear clutch holder. Take the cover plate off (HPI 76929) and make sure the inside of the gear isnt worn too badly from shifting into second. If it is order the updated part (hpi 87227) that is stronger. If its ok when you put it back together put CA glue on the screws that hold the small plate on. Those like to loosen themselves and break things.
Also grab all of the drive cups and see if they move up or down, if they do bearings are shot and you will have to replace them. Also take the front and rear skid plates off and grease the bevel gears.
And lastly go through and check all of the screws that thread into metal to make sure they are loctited. If they arent you can break a lot of stuff in 2 or 3 tanks.
