gearing

Running a 14t pinion and a 56t spur, what should I change to get a little speed out of it? Pinion or spur or even both?

To increase top speed you would either increase the pinion size OR decrease the spur size. Doing this at all assumes, of course, that your motor/engine can handle the increased load.

Manna monster, I'm thinking of a 12t pinion and maybe a 65t spur?

No, you are going the wrong way. You want something like a 16/54.

Be carfeul though, I would recommend doing one gear at a time 2-3 teeth at a time. If you make too big of a jump then you will be sluggish at the bottom and you can hurt your equipment.

So more teeth more speed, less teeth more torque?

dracy69 08-30-2012 01:07 PM

For the pinion yes.

On the spur gear it is more teeth = more torque. Less teeth = more speed

ok fellas, this is what I ordered so what spur should I run with it to get the most speed

Uhm, send it back and get the correct pinion for your "Manna" Monster.

Tell us what truck you're running, motor type/kV rating, and the tires you'll be running. From there, we can tell you how to gear it.

Losi 8 with mamba 2200kv motor and monster esc, far as tires just stock

Ah, here we go! Assuming the 8ight Buggy. This was stock geared 14/48 from what I understand, and at 1.23:1 Drive Ratio, that's REALLY TALL.

3.30 Diff Ratio like every other E-Buggy ever, 4.45" tires, 4S LiPo.

At 14/48, you'll get ~42mph, so-so torque, and probably have heat issues.

At 13/48, things get a lot more sane. 1.14:1 Drive Ratio, ~40mph, still might be a little much depending on your setup.

I'd say start at 13/48 and move the gearing around if you find you've got the thermal headroom, or are coming up short (too hot).

Edit: Saw your first post, 14/56 in an 8ight? That's 1.04:1, try 13/48 or if you want to keep the 56t spur and have room, 15/56 is 1.13:1, which is very close to the 1.14:1 that 13/48 gives.

I picked the losi up as a roller, and sold the erevo but kept the esc and motor, so if I come up short(motor hot) that means I'm over gearing? Never thought that gearing was as complicated as it seems

WindDrake 09-01-2012 11:16 AM

Yep, motor too hot (180f) means over-geared.

xTHExSA1NTx 09-03-2012 08:26 PM

yeah but i noticed the other day when we put 6s to my dads revo the thing got hot fast...

dracy69 09-04-2012 06:01 AM

running a 6S will do that
