Default Savage 25 with 4.6 Engine??

I'm looking to upgrade my Savage 25 I was wondering if putting the 4.6 engine in would hurt the truck at all of make it break more often and what kind of added performance I would get out of the 4.6??

It'll definitely give it more power, but it WILL put more strain on your drivetrain.

You should probably consider upgrading to Savage X diffs and all the plastic bits you need for the easier access.. That was the big problem with the 25 back in the day - weak drivetrain, that was particularly difficult to repair and get to.. You have to take the whole truck apart practically if you need to replace something in the drivetrain..

Still, shouldn't be too expensive with bits from ebay. I think you need shock towers, bumpers, the diffs, cups, maybe a 2-3 other little things.. I'm a bit out of the Savage loop, but others can chime in. The Savage 25 is a good truck - you just need to beef up the drivetrain...

I think those diffs have the 2 gears (4 total) and should at least be upgraded to the 4 gears (six total) if you want to stay on a budget. Shim while you're in there to make it last. If you feel like spending money, get the bulletproof assemblies off ebay. That's the main upgrade I'd do then see how it goes. What pipe do you plan on using?

I don't know yet I wanted to get someones input on a new exhaust pipe too. Even if I don't change the motor I would like to change the exhaust pipe with the stock engine. What would you say is the best exhaust pipe out there?

I was either looking at the aluminum tuned pipe or the ribbed pipe

Forget the ribbed.. Loud and not great performance was the word back in the day..

Just get the HPI polished.. There are better places to invest than on some expensive pipe IMO...

ERCM is a good (but expensive) choice. Jammin JP3 works pretty good. Any 086 is popular as well.

i have a Jammin JP-3 and a Axial .32 yet if you are going to upgrade don't get the 4.6 even tho i have had good experience with it it will probably hurt your drive train id get the Axial .28 or .32 the .28 is a good engine and holds a tune, i had that engine and it didn't blow up the Transmission my T-Maxx so it'll work with the savage, i have the .32 in my savage and Love it its Extremely beast !

choices to consider
------------------------------------------------------
Axial .28 - 37,500RPM

(wont affect drive train as much and has the same displacement as the K4.6HO )

129.99 (cheapest less stressful engine)
---------------------------------------------------------
K4.6HO 3,900RPM

("High Output" same as the Axial .28 but HPI brand )

198.99 Most costly and 2nd most powerful
----------------------------------------------------------
Axial .32

Extreme Power

37,500RPM

159.99 most power best bang for the buck

You could get a lrp .28 or losi 454, better than all the engines mentioned. Easy to tune, good power, and very reliable.
Now if you want something a little more powerful than the lrp .28, get a picco .28 or lrp .30

I wouldn't worry to much about drivetrain stress and breakage, its going to happen one way or the other if your bashing. Just upgrade to x, xl or flux bulks, and sintered or machined bulletproof diffs, and xl or flux axles, dog bones, and axles. You can get all this for pretty cheap off eBay. Most of the time when you buy bulletproof diffs off eBay, they come with the xl, or flux bulks for around $40 or less.

Whatever you do dont keep the 25, IMO they are the worst nitro engine "I" have ever used. I have seen people have good luck with the Picco .28's

Bingo.. X2.

The HPI 25 was a good engine for what it was.. Now, the Force/Hot Bodies .26, THAT was bad...

Savage4.6dgk -- Did you upgrade your drive shaft and axles too when you upgraded your diffs??

I still own a Savage 25 RTR. Bought it back in 2002.

I also run in it the Axial .28 1S. Great engine for what it cost and very reliable.

As far as the drivetrain, I haven't had to rebuild much of it, just some blown diffs. That was with the original S-25 engine though. Mine came with the 2 spider gears in the diff and every time they blew out, I replaced them with the 4 spider gear upgrade. Doesn't cost much at all, but my diffs have not had a single problem since then either. Those are the only things I would recommend when going to any engine over the .21 sized engines with the old style drivetrain. Other than that, you should be fine.
