1/5th scale ???

Lookin on e-bay, seems I see a few cheap 1/15th scale 4x4.

Does anyone know anything with these ? or own one ?

I was curious if the engines even have piston rings in them ? and how the tranny, servo and ect hold up.

they looked cheaply made.

any other links to check out ?

Yeah they look cheap to me to. I'd personally save the $$ and just buy a kit I could trust. The maintenance on an RC can end up being pretty pricey so why save on the purchase when it just might cost 3 times as much in maintenance.

Plus I'd forever look at it and think to myself that it's just not quite the real deal....

One of my friends got an off-brand 1/5 scale and it's a little lacking quality wise. The shocks aren't even able to be filled with oil, they just rely on the springs to do all the work. And finding parts for it is a pain.

I was thinking the same thing.

I contacted two different sellers of 1/5th scale on e-bay.

Both could not answer any of my questions, They just replied back with what is listed for the info, is all they have.

I had wondered if the engine even had pistion rings and they could not answer that. lol

thanks for the replies.

Yeah, Redcat dunerunner.
The engine is a chinese knockoff of a 2 bolt CY engine.
Yeah, they have rings.
The engine is very slow as it comes, but a tuned pipe makes it...uh...less slow. The tuned pipes available don't just bolt on though. They have to be modified.
You can mod the heck out of these engines and get decent speed from them, but you have to spend the time, and have the ability to do so.
The trans gears are very cheap plastic, won't last one day of running fast, and should be upgraded to steel, which you can buy for extra $, of course. But the problem with the steel gears is, they can generate enormous amounts of heat.
The electronics (TX, RX, servos) are horrible and must be replaced immediately.
The plastic is bulky enough, but a bit on the brittle side, so a wide front bumper comes in handy.
Dogbone pins shear off and come loose a lot....I could go on and on...

Bottom line is, you can spending a good chunk of time and money to get this particular model up to acceptable levels of performance. If you like to tinker, then go for it.
