I would also do the gear swap in the tranny.
Losi hi-speed pinions are only plus 1. 8man makes more selections. I'll try and find his site for you.
EDIT: Hmmm...his site is no longer working. I just sold some brand new plus 3's to "turbo head" you can see if he wants to sell them.

Engine
I've heard a lot of good things about LRP but I've heard the same guys say the front bearing likes to go out after 1 or 2 gallons. I didn't know they were all made by the same company, I've had a XTM 247 for years and it's a great engine. I've had a RB for about 4 yrs and it's still a powerhouse. That's why I'm leaning towards the TM928, 728, or ST28. I may still go with a less expensive engine like the LRP though. Do you think it's more powerful than the Machs?

Pinions
I post there to. I've got the stock pinion/spur set coming since mine are stripped and also the 2nd and 3rd sets. I want to use the other 2 and see which I like best of the 3. I hate to do the FOC. I'll look into this other source you're talking about. Thanks for the tip
What's the TD Hub? I havn't played with the shift points yet.

One Way Bearing. The downfall of most multiple speed trannies.
Forget the one speed hub...great for racing as you're maintaining the speed. Not much launch for dragging. It's basically keeping you in second gear the entire time from start to stop.
Some new guy is making plus tooth sized pinions.

PS If you want to be the fastest...go electric. Nitros take too long to spool up.

teal-mach427 is the best budget motor hands down..
rb928 is a beech to tune..but is great once you get it...when you get it...
lrp is great and a power house...but most of the have bad bearings..and they drink alot
the picco is good..but it tops out quick
if you have a race lst..and you lightend it some..the nova roto .21 is awsome and you cant beat it for the price..(but its a nova it takes time to break in..but last forever)

I don't think there ever was one. The LST2 came with 18/25 and you could buy a plus 1 (hi speed), 19/26.
