BL savage conversion
hey guys.
i recently bought a $50 savage and used the good parts to fix my broken one up. anyway, it left me with alot of major parts. like the complete front/rear end, transmission, arms, wheels, etc... so i wanna do something with the left over parts. i wanna make a brushless savage out of them. only problem is i know nothing about how to do it or nothing about electric rc for that matter. so if someone can point me in the right direction i cant tell you how much i would appreciate it! |
Monster truck conversions arent cheap cause esc and motor ~300, batts ~200 plus charger, balancer and other mounting hardware

Haven't seen anyones comments about this, but its only one Ive seen FLM's conversion (as well as LCG, extended TVPs) - 10th item down on the page,
Brushless Conversion FLM49000 - http://www.fastlanemachine.com/Publi...6/Default.aspx A brief pictorial how-to on this one (my main gripe about FLM is there are no instructions of any kind, so this is a 1st for them) - http://www.fastlanemachine.com/Publi...3/Default.aspx If I were doing this to mine, I'd seriously look at MMM combo with a pr of 3S 5-6000mah lipos. I never got my B'Day present from last year (Oct) cause the delivery on the BL E-Revo kept getting pushed back and now it looks like I'm getting a BL Flux which runs basically the same setup, just diff color. |
Nice truck, Joe! Followed your build on RCM and was very tempted about doing mine.
That was before HPI announced the BL Flux, lol!! |

Sorry, I do both and assume.....my bad.
MMM - Castle Creation's Mamba Monster Max esc (electronic speed control) - this is their 1/8th esc and made to handle up to 6S lipo (1S or one lipo cell is 3.7v nominal, so 6S is 22.2volts). Castle sells the MMM by itself or in a combo as its called, that includes a Steve Neu designed, Castle licensed, brushless motor in 2200 or 2650kv sizes. Steve Neu's brushless motors are considered one of, if not the best out there and Castle's licensed motor offering is right up there as well. To run 6S and keep it balanced, most common thing is to buy a pair of 3S lipo batteries (11.1volts) and use a series wire harness to run them as a single 6S battery. When you wire batts in series, you double the voltage). Truck stays balanced with one 3S batt in each side. The size (mah = milli-amp-hours) or capacity is the 5000 - 6000 figure. Above 6000, the batts are getting physically real big and weight becomes a concern. Bigger number gives a longer run time before needing to recharge them. Help? |

hate to be a pian but...where do you recommend buying all this stuff?
|
Converted Sav winds up being a heavy truck, like 11+ lbs and the MMM is the only esc I've seen that warns your batts may not be good enough. Lipo is expensive, but like a lot of other things in life, you get what you pay for. You really need to know the size of the batt box to nail this down, but get some quality cells from NuEnergy, PolyQuest, PolyRC, Orion, Hyperion, etc, a name brand batt. These are matched when assembled and will deliver the juice. Brushless conversion is not the place to run NiMH.
Worth a mention are the Zippy brand lipos that HobbyCity sells - these are much cheaper and seem to deliver the performance the name brand cells do. There's been speculation these are quality cells that are outside spec range of the big name brands made in China and HobbyCity is using them. There're a lot using them and they seem to be pretty good, given the price and the feedback. |

I shop around for batts - plane guys have been using them far longer than the surface side of rc and they have some good places with good prices. When you get to the point its time for batts (when you know batt box dimensions), you can shop. If you're estimating at this stage, premimum 3S, 5000mah lipo will be about $125 and a cheap, but apparently decent lipo (Zippy) is a little more than half that. |
Duster_360,
Thanks. MoparRules, Get your stuff from www.rc-monster.com Mike. He's is the man. I live in far away Malaysia & even then, his service has been top notch. For motor - Neu 1515 series something with a KV less than 2000. I'm using a cheapy Feigao 9XL (1800's KV). KV = rpm per volt. For esc - Castle Creations Mamba Monster Max. Nothing else but THE controller of choice for 8th scale application at the moment. U can something more expensive but not necessarily with the same performance For battery - Polyquest 5S (to match the motor with less than 2000KV) 5000 to 6000mah. I'm using Zippy 5S 5000mah lipo myself. As Duster_360 said, Zippy is nice. Gearing - I'm using 15t pinion with 49T spur Conversion kit - FLM extended chassis forward gearbox conversion By adding sway bar, this setup works nicely on a track. Regards, Joe Ling |
brushless savage
hpi is coming out with a brushless savage flux which already comes with the mamba monster max esc and neu motor.
you might want to wait for this truck to come out rather than trying to convert a nitro savage . i know im going to be buying one of the savage flux brushless when it finally arrives in canada. |
My biggest gripe about the Flux Savage is that the motormount seems to be made for their motor only. wich is a modified Castle 2200.
I have a FLM Savage too, but never run it. I guess it was more about the build to me. Maybe if my e-revo start breaking left and right i'll get the savvy out.:sneaky http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/f...sMaximizer.jpg |
