grease...build up inside engine/tools

i just got a new truck today used with a wasp .28
i put in a medium traxxas plug, and she fired up besides foward not engaging the engine sounded good, well i pulled the plug back out and it had alot of grime on it,looked like almost grease......question is if you pull a glow plug and its junked up with dirt/grease should i completely tear apart and clean the engine,i mean it did start,so i know the engine is not smoked.......and it would be my first time tearing an engine apart
now i dont have the fly wheel or the clutch tool, do i need them or can i swing it with regular tools....and i think i remembered a tool for locking the piston....i know i know its my first time even thinking of tearing an engine down.
im gonna search the forums also just thought id run it by you guys right quick....
so quick re-cap
-buid up on the glow plug-should i tear the engine apart and clean?
-tools-do i need certain tools to do this(flywheel tool, clutch tool..ect)or can i wing it with regular tools?

No substitute for right tools - that thru the glow plug piston locking tool is great for bending con rods and unbalancing the rotating assembly! The ofna flywheel wrench is all of 6 bucks or so and it will make life much easier - clutch nuts are a breeze with one and no more destroying flywheels with pliers, no more have cluch nut come loose while engine is running and destroying clutch and maybe even end of the crank or buggering threads up so bad can't use them anymore! No more offbalancing engines after they've been pulled apart either. Offbalance engines eat cb brgs and it just gets old really really fast.

I don't own a flywheel puller - mine have always come off easy enough by tapping around on back of flywheel with small rubber mallet. Don't buy an rc one - go to walmart and they're like $3 - auto battery terminal puller.

On your orig quest - I'd spray some wd40 down glowplug and turn it over - then turn rc upside down and put paper towel over glowplug hole and turn it over some more. Depending on what came out - that would make decision to tear down or not - pretty clean - no teardown; bunch of gook - consider teardown. Frankly with that engine, I'd run it til it quits and not worry about it.

is this engine no good?
im new so i want your opinion,i bought the truck used,so i didnt get a chance
my lhs has a diablo .28 are they any good, from trinity i think.
also with the truck he just gave me a hotbodies 3.5,and some other engine not sure what it is but its a 3.5 as well.i figured they would be good to practice rebuilding on before i wreck a perfedtly good engine.
so the inevitable whats a good engine, crazy low end, good all around or a mid,and whats a good fast engine, just point me in the right direction im new at chosing nitro engines.
and i will take your advice on the tools, besides i want to have every tool possible to make life easy.

RC Car Actio mag had a 18 engine shootout few yrs back and there were 14 engines tested - installed, breakin, the tund by pros and radared for speed and time to distance. The Wasp 18 was dead last. Suspect if test was redone with 28, it would be in the sam place. Its not a bad engine, it does run like you said, its just a cheap engine. Its good to learn on and doesn't cost a firtune if you mess it up and fry it running too lean or something.

Price is a generally a good indicator on engine quality/performance. You don't get something for nothing. Engines at the top though seem to have a "name" cost associated with them and you'd have to be a good racer to tell the diff. You would see a marked diff with a $250-300 engine over the Wasp.

Look at an SH28 (cheap, but well made - Asia based so you get a little more for your $), the Axial 28 - better, or the Picco in this size - also better. I had a 27Picco in my 4.6SS and it was crazy. The 32 Axial I had was even crazier, I had prob blowing up tires running on pavement with that thing. That had bottom end for days but you had to gear it for speed if yiou wanted speed.

The Diablo may be a smidge better than the Wasp, but they're close.

i really was looking at the axial stuff....its quality and it looks awsome too,and ive heard a ton about picco engines also....thanks man
