Why is everyone so down on XMODS?
 

I mean seriously why? I think they're sweet R/C's. They are FULL HOBBY GRADE and they're $30 at Radio Shack now.

People don't like them because they lack the performance, steering, and speed of the Mini-Z from what I have heard. But that doesn't mean everyone has to be down on them...that's what HOP-UPS are for!!!!

To me, it would be like everyone talking down on the RC8 and no one buying it because the XRAY buggy is better. Makes no sense to me. I could afford an RC8 WAY before I could get an XRAY.

Quite frankly, I think XMODS are sweet, and I'm about to put Lipo in mine and start fixing it up.

Can I have y'alls input??

Hop up your x mod and go to a track and run w mini z s....
I have been racing mini z s for 5 years and I have yet to see an x mod
run with the a mainers....
the majority i have seen had severe glitching problems.....:nod:
X-mods are fun at home but at the track they work like a toy.....

Well I have intentions of trying some stuff on atomicmods.com. After putting Lipo in, I will do the on/off switch by-pass mod that should reduce glitching, and I will do the mod to put a better radio in

WHY WOULD YOU DO ALL THAT WORK and still have a sub standard rig? I totally get the hobby aspect of what you're trying to do and I applaud you for that. You're right for $30.00 they are sweet. I've owned 15 of those cars not to mention the 8 I purchased to sell to a hobby shop. For what they are they are cool, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, I have to go with Bermbuster on this one. Even an old MR-01 will handle better.

If you dig it, go with it.

How much is your $30 X Mod going to cost after all of the modifications your going to do to it?

I used to race mini-zs about 4 years ago and we did have people try to race with X-Mods. Even the guys who could get a mini-z working great just couldn't make an x-mod even close to competitive. Now I've switched to 1/18 on-road anyway, so much smoother control and workability :cool:.

A few friends and I raced x-mods every week for a few years. We rented a banquet room at the local community centre every week and split the cost.
This is truly buget racing, a $30. car and a handful of AAA's and we were good to go. That is after a lot of stroking and modifying the first generation x-mods. We are talking- resistors in the servo wires
- different springs
- different tires
- carbon fibre driveshafts
- spinbrush motors, thanks to Scotty
Now we are having fun.
When the generation 2 cars came along, we could not believe the difference. This car goes fast without changing the motor and gearing. It steers as it is and handles pretty good right out of the box.
The only reason we are still not using these great little cars is that the radios are so crappy. I still have 4 new cars that I cannot use because the radios wear out prematurely.
X-mods put everyone on a level playing field. We all had to deal with the lack of response from the crappy radios. We were all handicapped the same.
Htown Xmods was probably the longest running group of x-mod racers ever.
We ran on 3' lanes with a 30' x 16' layout. Changed tracks every week and in between, ran in my rec room on a 12' x16' roadcourse with 2' lanes.
I still feel that X-mods gave you 90% of the fun for 10% of the cost.

I like the idea of being on a level playing field but where im from its all about going/being fast....We have guys putting $400 into a mini z....they drive like they are on rails at speeds of 30mph....:tire::tire:
When they run the stock class it is like watching paint dry.....

Haha! Where are you from?:lol: The Xmods are fun toys to play with. Its not hobby grade though. To get it to a point where it is hobby grade is not very cost effective. Check this video:

While you can do a lot to a Xmod, such as changing to hobby grade electronics and buying many aftermarket parts, it still isn't enough. I think the main problem with Xmods are the slack in the parts. A Mini Z is much more precise and built to tighter tolerances than a Xmod will ever be.

Anyways, I see what y'all are saying...(there I go with that "y'all" again LOL). But I decided to hell with the mini-z AND the XMOD. My dad is letting me build a track in the backyard for my Micro-T :D

If you want one, get them while you can. They're done for. Discontinued. My local Radio Shack has them for $15 right now.

that happened about a year ago but they were continued. Ill buy a couple and all the hop-ups available and race against mini-z´s to know the difference

Did they discontinue all the parts for them too? I had to hunt down a AWD kit on E-bay because no store nor online had them.

Mini Z > Xmod.

Following is opinion, not fact.

Xmods are NOT hobby grade. Personaly having owned one it had a rediculous amount of slop in the steering, it was not quick really either. Handling was poor, speed was poor, parts quality was poor. To just get it to "hobby" standards I'd have to have had put way too much into it to get it to feel "real". I cannot deny that I did have ALOT of fun with it though in my basement.

I sold mine for way more than I bought it for, and original black skyline though.

I've got both and to bash the X-Mod is just snobbery. You're talking a $200+ Kyosho vs a $50 car so yes there is going to be a difference. To say they're not hobby grade is assinine, you can upgrade all parts just like a Mini-Z.
