3D printed 1/32 scale RC car
 

I wanted to share a little project I have been working on.

It is still in prototype stages, but here is the first rendition.

I have a lot of the Tamiya Mini 4WD cars that me and my daughter play with. Over time I collected a few parts and thought I would build a little RC car.

It is using a 10amp micro ECS, the cheap china servo, a Tamiya mini 4WD double shaft motor, and two 1s lipos I had laying around from a drone I never use.

The body is a lexan Tamiya mini 4WD body. Paint job done by my 5 yr which I think is pretty cool.

The running gear is from a Mini 4wd and I did a slot car type layout that works well. Bearings in the front wheels, and bushings in the rear.

I still need to work on the steering, and re print the rear wheels as they are from another project.

Also have a few videos I will try to upload, this little thing is a rocket. Easily as fast and responsive as a mini Z.

Really cool! I just got my 3D printer back up and running after a year out of service, and was interested in some of the Mini4WD steering mods too.

If you can also share specifically which servo you used, it would be great!

What is the required print bed size? Mine only goes up to 6"...

Thats a pretty unusual motor mount haha, but if it works, it works. Im also designing my own 1/18th scale 3d printed car (here) looks like its a lot of fun though!

You could easily split the chassis up into two sections, and just screw them together.. or alternatively rotate the build 45 Deg and you can get about 8.5 inches of build space.

My print bed is also 6" No issue printing this. You could design it as a module type chassis if you wanted to go bigger.

Guys just a quick update.

Everything is still working and I have been driving the hell out of it. So far so good. Once I got the hang of it, I switched it out with a higher performance motor and wow, this little thing is a absolute rocket now.

I installed a REV2 Tuned mini 4wd motor in it.

Where did you get those foam tires? Or did you make them yourself? How is the grip you get from them, and what surface do you drive on?

This is fantastic, thanks for sharing. I've thought about doing something similar, but decided to focus on FDM 3D printed slot cars. If you want to do custom tires, it isn't too hard. You can 3D print a tire in PLA or whatever, and use it to made a mold with Smooth On oomoo. Then, pour the tire in that silicone mold with smooth on vytaflex. It comes in several hardnesses, the 40 is a safe start. If you do some googling on making replacement slot car tires, there is a lot out there. I just took my first crack at it, and it was surprisingly easy.

3D printed tires actually drift really well. I have some flex filament Im going to try and print for the tread and see how that works out.

The tires I was using is from a Tamiya MINI 4WD kit. part number is 15328.

The grip is incredible. I run it in my garage and inside my house ( hard wood ) when it is raining and crappy outside.
