The guys I will be up against built cars from the chassis up using parts from various 1/8 platforms and made their own chassis and shock towers.

I saw your post and have a few questions. I have a Serpent 811 buggy and the car is heavy.. I was thinking of converting either a Losi SCTE or my Hyper 10SC or my STCRC Slash 4x4 to a 1/8 scale GT. I also think the Tekno SCT10 or equivalent buggy would do well. I am wondering if the guys you mentioned in your post are using any of these formats. The may be the the best solution. The cars are durable, yet will be more nimble. Run times can be increased. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding your Serpent.. I am not aware of any company making a carbon fiber chassis.. you could check with SNR. Serpent sells a light weight ESC mounting tray, but it's $100..too steep for me.. There is a guy on the buggy forum (RC Mayor) that makes carbon fiber battery tray top pieces.. You could also drill out some of the battery tray and maybe some of the plastics.. Possibly some holes in the side and bottom of the battery tray, but then you are taking away weight from the rear.
