    This is pretty wild looking... I'm trying to decipher what I am looking at....is that an 'inverted spur gear' to keep the motor near the centerline of the vehicle?

    Yep, most track owners will come after you with sharp objects if you burn off excess sauce on the track. It makes the track greasy and damages the fibers. Drivers should wipe their tires down...
