Default TRS 2009 RACE REPORT (Shanghai China)

Shanghai, China.

Saturday November 21

The 2nd Annual TRS ASIA CUP was bordering cancellation due to rain in Shanghai. Top drivers including Mike Swauger, Fukuda, Jilles Groskamp, Meen Vejrack, Garen Hagobian arrived Shanghai on a Thursday only to find rain, and more rain. But on Friday night, the weather began to clear and we woke up to a beautiful Saturday but low temperatures. The track needed to dry and morning free/control practice took care of that and by afternoon's qualifying heats, the track had traction and we ran 3 qualifying rounds. On Saturday night, there was a welcome dinner for all drivers as well as prize drawing. Many sponsors and top prizes given out include top of line Team Orion engines and pipes. Mike Swauger, Fukuda & Jilles Groskamp also donated their race bodies with autograph to three lucky winners at the prize drawing. A fun filled evening. There were drivers from 10 different countries/areas representing China, USA, Japan, Holland, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei and Korea. We had a lower turn out due to weather because many local drivers from China did not anticipate weather clearing up.

Sunday, November 22

Another gorgeous day in Shanghai and temperature warmed up but still cold. Morning free practice took place and then 2 more final qualifying rounds brought us to lunch time. Mike Swauger TQ in the 1/8 class and Fukuda TQ in the Touring Class. In the afternoon, Touring Class Finals had 3 mains and 1/8 Finals had 2 mains. The race organizers decided to change the format from Christmas tree to ABC mains. A Main Final was 45 Minutes, B Main 30 minutes, C Main 30 minutes.

In the 1/8 "A" Main Final, Mike Swauger showed why he is one of the top racers in the world by dominating from start. Garen Hagobian, Motonica driver from the USA was in 2nd with 11 year old JJ Wang from Shanghai 6 secs behind, and Hj Irman, top driver from Brunei was just a half lap behind JJ Wang so the fight for second/third place was extremely exciting. However, Garen chose a race strategy that included a tire change mid-race but saw a flame out during the pit. At the end, Mike Swauger easily took the Championship, Jimmy Qian from Shanghai drove a safe and conservative race to take 2nd, and JJ Wang losing a 9 lap lead over Jimmy due to clutch problem came in 3rd. Gary Soh from Malaysia took 4th, and Garen Hagobian took 5th (retiring with 6 minutes before end of race). Hj Irman from Brunei in 6th after coming back on track from a long repair.

In the 1/10 Touring "A" Main, it was very very exciting with former World Champion Fukuda battling with Top Thailand driver Meen Vejrack and European EP Champion Team Orion driver Jilles Groskamp. Top Hong Kong driver Samual Chui drove a solid race but could not keep up with the 3 top drivers. Jilles suffered a flame out due to error on fuel timing and thus lost valuable time. Meen Vejrack from Team KM Thailand was piloting the new KM XK-1 prototype which proved quite competitive. At the end, it was Fukuda who brought his A game and showed us why he is who he is, one of the top touring drivers in the world. Final results Fukuda 1, Meen 2, and Jilles 3.

After the award ceremony presented by Mr. Charlie Siribodhi, President of RCCA and VP of FEMCA, Mr. Gu from the Shanghai RC Association, a BBQ was arranged by the TRS Race organizers. And that concludes the 2nd Annual TRS ASIA CUP, we hope to see more of you next year!
