And this track is so damn big, that you can't get the whole track in one picture....

I'm not the best when it comes to stitching..

FORGASS Race #6
March 27-28, 2004
Naples, Florida (The Swamp)

The Florida On-Road Gas State Series has returned to “The Swamp” again
for it’s last race of the 2003-2004 season. The points battle was tight
and people knew they had to show and put a good run in to maintain
their positions in the standings. The weather seemed to cooperate this
time, giving us fantastic temperatures and sunny skies all weekend! The
last time the series visited this track the weather didn’t cooperate
and the racers had to settle for running only two qualifiers on
Saturday, making it an official race weekend. Some improvements have
really helped make this facility shine. Chris Fowler, the track
director, had two coats of sealer laid down on the old asphalt and
raised the driver’s stand 3 feet to aid visibility. Drivers on the
stand now have to be careful of nosebleeds because they’re up so high!

The crowd was a bit thin, but racing action was HOT!!

In 200mm sedan, Scotty gray got off to a rocky start, getting a feel
for the new surface, but was still able to snag the provisional TQ with
13 laps in 5:02.40. He bettered his own times in 2nd round with 14 laps
in 5:16.18 and even more in the third round with 14 laps in 5:16.08.
Nobody else could touch him in touring, with Omar Mcfarlane being the
closest, turning 13 laps in 5:03.70. It takes a while to get around
this track with a lap that covers 1,440 feet! Average mph was around 40
mph, which is around 10-13 mph more than any other track in the series.

Richard Fine grabbed the provisional TQ in 1/10th outlaw in first round
with 13 laps in 5:09.38, but lost it to Rick Bedasse in round 2 with 13
laps in 5:04.05, but lost it to Collin Ashley in the third round with
14 laps in 5:19.67 and Jim Rice was nipping at his heels with 14 laps
in 5:22.05

And naturally, “The Wonderboy” Scotty Gray took TQ in 1/8th scale in
the first round with 15 laps in 5:10.09 and bettered his time in round
3 with 15 laps in 5:10.06. MRX-3 driver, David Diehl was close with 15
laps in 5:11.41.

Lower Mains

The sedan C main didn’t happen because Jarrod Pilone broke his car and
didn’t run, so Nick Stentiford was declared the winner and bumped up to
the B main, without even having to race! The B main was dominated by
racing veteran Charles Bone in a Nitro TC3, nobody even challenged him
for the lead. He had a two lap cushion at the end over Gary Tuttle
(Mugen MTX-3).

The 1/10th outlaw B main was won by Nick Grabas, who ran a 200mm outlaw
car (MTX-3). He swapped places with John Houtenbrink (serpent 835) many
times, but finally took first place on lap 29 and never looked back to
the end of his 58 lap run. John rallied to finish with 50 laps in third
place behind Michael Brady, who had one lap on John.

The 1/8th open B main was dominated by Gary Crumb in his Serpent 950-R.
Gary started first and finished first, never losing the lead. Gary also
owns the series mascot, a friendly golden retriever who was seeking
attention from everyone with his red rubber ball.

A mains

The sedan A main was going to prove to be a fierce battle. The top
three points contenders were just five points apart in the series
standings. Ryan Rhodes lead Francis Lee by 3 points, and Omar Mcfarlane
was only 2 points behind him. Ryan was starting 6th, Francis starting
3rd, and Omar starting 2nd. Scotty didn’t seem to be getting a
challenge for the lead, so all eyes were on Ryan(Mugen MTX-3), Francis
(Serpent 710), and Omar (MTX-3). Francis got off to a good start,
getting him in 2nd place by the 2nd lap, but got into trouble and
dropped back to 8th place on lap #3 and had to battle his way back.
Andre Saunders (Serpent 710) moved up into the top 3 to put pressure on
Scotty. Omar was bouncing back from 3rd and 2nd place until Scotty hit
the wall on the back straight and broke his rear lower suspension arm,
giving the lead up to Omar. He held onto the lead for ten laps until he
stripped his second gear spur and fell back, giving up first place (and
his championship hopes) to Ryan Rhodes. Ryan eventually moved up and
battled for first place with Andre Saunders for the remaining 11 laps
of the race. Andre and Ryan ran neck and neck for all of those laps,
swapping places four times until the very last lap when Ryan pulled a
gutsy pass on the outside of Andre on the last turn before the timing
loop, claiming victory with 77 laps, .27 seconds ahead of Andre!

The 1/10th outlaw A main proved to be no less exciting than the Sedan
main. The real race that went down is between Collin Ashley (Serpent
835) and Rick Bedasse (Serpent 835). Collin was the TQ, but had a bad
start and gave up the lead to Rick very early. The two traded first and
second place positions 8 times! It was very exciting to watch, one
particular incident was when Collin’s car twitched in the mid-section
of the track and that was all Rick needed to pass him, but then Collin
passed him again at the next turn. It was true “slicing and dicing.”
Rick eventually took the lead on lap 69 and held off Collin with a 3.17
second cushion!! Rick secured a second place finish in the series
standings, just two points behind Juan Prohias who did not attend, but
he clinched the championship with his drop.

1/8th Scale didn’t see as much heated action. Chuck Moon asked for a
grace before the beginning of the race because he had problems getting
a tune on the car, which turned out to be a split pressure line to the
fuel tank. Scotty Gray was the TQ and never lost his lead in the entire
30 minute main for 84 laps! Serpent Teammate Chuck Moon was only one
lap behind him. Mark Harrison (Serpent 950-R) fell out of the race on
lap 41 after flying over the back wall and stripping 2nd gear on his
Serpent 950-R. He retired for the day after that. Greg Esser had radio
problems on lap 17, but rallied to fix his serpent 950-R and got back
on track in around 5 minutes to accumulate 61 laps and finish 7th place
overall. Don Gottlieb had an action packed start and after 11 laps his
left rear suspension lost a screw and the dogbone flew out. His pit man
rallied to fix the car and got him back out on the track 12 laps later
into the race and finished 5th place. Scotty secured his 1st place
finish in the standings, not being challenged by Joaquin Desoto. Chuck
Moon finished 3rd in the series and Don right behind him.

Thanks to Chris Fowler and the FORGASS team for putting on an excellent
race weekend! We can’t wait to race again next season!

-Jarrod Pilone

I take notes on the big stuff, I also make phone calls to get other driver's inputs.

I also have the complete race results that will show me what position each driver was on each lap, which helps alot.
