Hi

If you had the choice of either a Xray T3 2012 or a TRF417 V5, given the fact that both cars are now a bit old, which would you choose to race and which has the upper hand in terms of performance and other pros/ cons?

Are T3 2012 spare parts harder to find over a 417?

The Xray will be more durable. I've been running a T3 in VTA, for a couple of years and only broken a out drive cup on the front spool.

Both good cars. The V5 is as strong as the X-ray. Parts are also a bit cheaper, and all the essential bits are still easy to pick up.

Both can also compete at club level, especially on high grip carpet.

i think i'm going to run the 417 and sell the T3 if both are similar (purely because i'm heading 417 parts will be easier to come by).. Thanks

They're both good cars, drive whichever suits your style, or whichever is easier to get parts for where you are. Both are retro compatible with the current models' parts (within reason) so you have your choice.

Xray cars age incomparably better than Tamiyas- not to mention durability. Assuming the cars have been treated and maintained with similar care, I would go with the T3.

It's good to buy other cars for comparison, but an Xray is always better, you'll see...

agree. Also, xray are more consistent to drive and more predictable in set up changes for me compared to Tamiya. Their spare parts may be expensive but the essential parts are very strong - never broken an arm (front and rear) since I started racing with the T2 007.

I've been running my T4 2013 since late 2012 and just picked up a 2017 version. So far I've broken 1 front knuckle and a c-hub, since 2012. I've also had the XRay F1 which was solid. Raced both T4 cars in the US Indoor Champs this weekend and neither car needed a repair. The Tamiya cars I've had were good cars but nowhere close in quality or durability. That isn't to say they aren't good race cars but if you are comparing quality it isn't even close IMO. Cheaper parts price is a false economy when one car doesn't really break all that often.
