Default Best 1/8th Scale Platform for Speed Runs

Hey gents,

I'm looking to build an 1/8th scale car for speed run purposes. Does anyone have any recommendations on a preferred platform?

I'm looking for a platform that has good parts support and is able to accept aftermarket ESC's and motors without too much special modification to the chassis.

I've got Kyosho and Serpent. And I'm interested in the the Mugen. Is it that much better? Only way I'll see one is to buy one.

I also have a Kyosho GT2 and the Mugen is much better in every way I can think of. I have never had a Serpent Cobra GT but I know they are very good in quality but the parts are not as available as the Mugen or Kyosho.

I think a 977e is a much better choice, due the low weigh, low CG and easy to install 2x 3S or 2x 4S batteries.

Foam tires and an unprepared roadway are a bad combination unless you add a lot of downforce, which you don't want to do for a speed run.

Why not the Traxxas??

While the XO-1 has the ability to be fast. The stock tires are terrible. Only real option is going with 1/5 tires. Had mine for almost 3yrs and never been above 70-75mph. Recently installed 1/5 wheel adaptors. Just need to buy another set of tires.

The 977e is a great 1/8 pan car but is limited in gearing. You will not be able to gear one of these very high. It would be better to convert a 977 nitro to brushless which will provide much more gearing options. But I think the OP was refering to 1/8 GT cars and not 1/8 pan cars?

There is a reason why not many people do speed runs with the XO1. They are good up to 100 mph but after that Ive heard they aren't very stable although a close friend of mine has had his xo1 up to 116 with stock motor on 6s which we believe is the world's fastest 6s xo1.

I still say the Mugen MGT7 is the best 1/8 car for speed runs. Here is a vid of mine doing 159 mph and then 160 mph on 8s:

I use this car as a daily basher and weekend speed run car. Very consistent and reliable, it is the best car I have ever had with no weaknesses.

I did see a movie with a GT speedrun with an exploding tire. That is a problem with rubber tires, they baloon and then explode.

That may have been my mugen blowing a GRP Velocity tire which is rated for 160-165 mph. I now run foams.
