Comm Cleaning..
 

What do you use to clean/polish the comm between runs? I don't cut my comm after every run...I cut it before the mains. Can I use a extremely fine sand paper? Any Recommendations?

there are two types that i know of.
one by trinity is made of fibergalss strands
and Peak has one that is made of a different material.

NOOOO! Don't use sandpaper.

Either use a comm stick, or I like to use an eraser, the nice soft ones you used in school! Running mod with the 'P' brushes on a club night, I generally do 2-3 runs and clean it with the eraser, then another 2-3 and cut the comm.

I use a fiberglass comm stick in stock... I dont take out the brushes once they are seated.. i take off the screw on one side of the endbell and remove the capacitor wire.. stick the comm stick in that hole and clean.. this way the brushes stay properly seated..

Just get it skimmed! :rolleyes: one lite skim every run is better than one heavy one when youve batterd the comm!

To clean it, an eraser works well. If you want to go the "comm pen" way, Trinity makes one. But, just FYI, the Trinity comm pen is just a re-sold item called a Fiberglass Prep Pen made by a company called Philmore. ;) Don't forget to use an xacto knife to clean out the space between comm segments and spray the comm. Also, don't forget to clean your brushes.

hi all ..
how bout cleaning comms of a Tamiya 540J silvercan motor ?
the motor seems to be closed dead and the comms are hard to reach ..
should i force the silver can open to reach the comms and brushes ?
any suggestions ?

if i'm not mistaken, you cant clean them..... I think there seal shut

the sides if the motor has two oval slots ..
usually i try to use a cotton bud to clean as much as possible..lol

The Tamiya Silver Can is a disposable motor - once it is done .. throw it away.

Fiberglass pencil can be purchased in the auto section at Wal-Mart.
Look around the touch up paint.
The pencil maybe labeled as a "Nick Sander"
Around $5

The eraser method works well, but will never be as good as a true comm cut.

Whats the reasoning...?

I`ve tired 1200 wet & dry (wet with kero) on an old pulled apart silver 540 arm mounted in a drill press, & it cleaned it up beautifully.

It's no the carbon scoring on the comm that makes it lose horsepower, it's when the comm starts getting out of round. Using sandpaper wont make it round again and sometimes makes it worse.
