Most people in Technical Forums list their specific equipment because if they have a problem, the folks trying to help them know exactly what they've got.

For instance:

RCDriver001: I've got a problem with my Spektrum Rx glitching and shutting down. Any advice as to what to look for???

Spektrum Rx

Now that we know he's running an LRP Quantum2, we know how to fix him. Because the Q2's BEC doesn't supply enough voltage to the Spektrum Rx to function properly.

So anyhow, it's not usually name dropping. it's more for technical purposes. (Especially on PC overclocking forums, which is my other hobby.)
