I just picked up a Hudy truer for my 1/12 tires. I think I got the hang of it, seems pretty easy. My question is does a half turn, or 1mm per pass seem about right?

For 12th scale tires I just set the truer to the final diameter I would like and cut them down. For WGT I will do an intermediate pass that is about halfway between the initial diameter and my desired final diameter, but I don't think it is necessary for 12th scale.

I also run 42 mm as my absolute maximum size, so that is what, at least 4-5 mm cut down in one 'pass' (across the tire twice) depending on the initial tire size?

Yeah, if that's the big Hudy auto, that thing can cut 1/8th fronts (some of the toughest rubber ever made) in 8mm or more chunks so puny little soft carpet rubber isn't going to phase it a bit. Take as big a cut as you want. I do like to leave enough meat on the first pass for a light final cut but you really don't have to.

Agree with above. I use my first tire and a set of calipers to get the diameter set right where I want it. This could mean many passes over the first tire. Once I have my desired size locked in then I will just run a bunch of tires through it to make sure there is no variance in size which has a chance of happening if you adjust the truer for every single tire you run through it.

I forgot to add, all that assumes that you also have the Hudy or some other good carbide cutter. I'm not sure what the Hudy truers come with these days. If it's a cheap saw blade looking thing, get a good cutter NOW.

I have never liked the results done with the toothed cutters. I modded my manual truer to use the diamond bit from an old Comm cutter from way back in the day I get perfect results one pass.

Thanks for all the info. It is the Hudy auto truer, unfortunately it does come with a cheap looking saw blade looking cutter. Sad for $550.00. Oh well, I'll order up a carbide cutter then.
