Im planning on racing this and it will be my first snowbirds. How would a racer determine if they're touring amateur 17.5 or touring stock 17.5, is this based off being sponsored or not? Just want to make sure I'm entering in the right class and I'm not sponsored.

Amateur is for Zero sponsorship drivers. You cant wear sponsor shirts or have decals on the car. They also monitor the lap times in practice and heats to determine if anyone is running the class that shouldnt be (there are some really really fast non sponsored guys out there). They try to keep it fair for everyone at the event.

Come on down and enjoy a week in FL! You wont regret it!!! If you need help all the factory teams will be there as well to help and answer questions about setup, gearing, motors, batteries, etc

Thanks a lot, I went to the snowbirds site and checked out results from 2014 and pretty much verified how tight the racing is...which is a plus. Looks to me Amateur Touring 17.5 will be great for me. Great schedule also, a person like me don't have to take a whole week off just to race, Thursday - Sunday is completely doable without affecting too much of family life.

Is there usually people selling products there? I may just buy motors and lipo while I'm there.

Yes, GS Hobby usually sets up a Pro Shop in a small room closest to the pits. A selection of motors, lipos, and many other frequently needed RC parts will be for sale.

Are you planning on skipping all of practice on Tuesday and Wednesday?

Yes, it's not possible with my current schedule to make it that early, wish I could though.

They have late arrival practice too at some point so you could still get track time. The birds allows more on track practice than any other big race around. Thats for sure!

Registration for 2015 Birds is not active yet, so they haven't officially announced the 2015 classes. In 2014 there were 10 Road Course classes and 10 Oval Classes. Here's a list of classes from 2014 Birds:

2014 Snowbird's Road Course Classes:
  1. Touring Modified
  2. Touring Super Stock 13.5
  3. Touring Stock 17.5
  4. Touring Amateur 17.5
  5. 1-12th GTP Modified
  6. 1-12th GTP Super Stock 13.5
  7. 1-12th GTP Stock 17.5
  8. World GT
  9. Formula 1
  10. US Vintage Trans-Am

2014 Snowbird's Oval Classes:
  1. Pro Modified
  2. Modified 10.5
  3. Super Stock 13.5
  4. Stock Spec 13.5
  5. Stock Car 17.5
  6. Outlaw NasTruck
  7. Super Truck 17.5
  8. SK Car 17.5
  9. 1/12 SuperStock 13.5
  10. Legends

Thanks everyone for the chatter!

Classes should be up very soon and very similar to last year. Getting a ton of emails and messages. Going to be an awesome time!

Bigdaddyswank 10-31-2014 11:38 AM

I'm generally not in favor of bringing on new classes just for the sake of having an 8 car field of "everyone gets a trophy." But we really need to bring some insanity back to on-road. By that I mean, lets have a 10th Scale pan can open class. It can be 2S mod 235mm GTP cars or Mod World Gt cars as in Vegas, but with open bodies. We have the catch fences and manufacturers making more of these cars these days, lets bring the insanity back!

demoman588 10-31-2014 03:11 PM

That s what i'm talking about bigdaddy. I love pro 10 and would run both oval and road if pro 10 was included this year. So far it's oval only for me so far.

T-Hawk 10-31-2014 03:49 PM

How convenient, I'm at Disney World at the same time.:sneaky: I'll have to swing by.:tire:

Are you volunteering to marshal them? :D

So what are you thoughts on what will be the biggest 2 classes in road and oval this year at the 'birds?

In 2014 the Stock Spec 13.5 class (Oval) had the most entries, 73 in all. There was an H-Main scheduled for Stock Spec 13.5, but all 3 H-Main drivers did not show! The G-Main for Stock Spec 13.5 had 9 of 10 drivers start.

The Touring Stock 17.5 class (Road Crs.) had the 2nd most entries, 69 in all. The G-Main for Touring Stock 17.5 had 6 out of 9 drivers start their race.

I predict the same 2 classes will be the biggest once again in 2015. I also predict that Formula One will almost double in entries since CRC, Xray and PROTOform are now supporting the F1 class. 2014 saw 18 F1 cars, I believe we will see 34 F1 entries in 2015.

cmunro 11-09-2014 04:03 PM

this will be my first big race so i dont know anything about the tech process as far as motors and lipos. can someone tell me the process?

They just make sure your motor is a legal motor. Battery voltage cant be over 8.4 and the temp of the battery has to be room temp.
