Help: Transmitter constant glitching

Hi all,
I bought an old Sanwa Gemini Exerd from Ebay. It was described as "untested". It seemed like a good idea at the time to have some sort of spare 40mhz tranny, for emergencies.
When I received it, I charged up the nicads, and tested it.

Yes, you are correct... It doesn't work.

When it's all connected up with a 40FM crystal inserted, the servo and ESC in the car just go mental. I'm not talking about some slight twitchy glitching here. I'm talking about full lock to lock servo arm movement, and the motor/ESC going absolutely bonkers. Input on the control sticks makes no discernable difference to the glitching.

Now; I'm testing with a KO receiver and KO crystals.
My expectations having been set because my KO transmitter and crystals work with a variety of receivers including KO, (obviously), Hitec, Novak, and Futaba.

So to my questions.
1. Is the Sanwa gear particularly fussy about matching hardware and crystals. So much so that we would see the behaviour explained above with non Sanwa equipment?

2. If the Sanwa Transmitter should work with non Sanwa Rx and crystals, at least in principle, then the Tx is FUBARED. I've opened it up, and there are no obvious blackened components on the circuit boards, so what could be wrong with it?

3. ... and how can I test and repair it?

Grateful for any input. I'ts really not worth spending a huge amount on such an old piece of equipment, so the ultimate option is simply to write it down to experience and bin the thing.

With a Sanwa transmitter you MUST use Sanwa crystals. It will work fine with a Futaba reciever I run them in all my cars with a super exces tranny. Futaba and KO crystals do not mix with a Sanwa radio.

Thanks guys.
I'll try borrowing some from a Sanwa owner at my next race meet.
Can I assume that crystals for the Gemini2 will work in the Gemini1?

Or put another way, are all 40FM Sanwa/Airtronics crystals the same?

Isn't Sanwa another name for Airtronics?

Yes.
As I understand it... Airtronics in the US, Sanwa elsewhere.
