Default Longer mains. You thoughts?

In Japan they're running 8 minute mains with 8-9 turn motors.
What are you opinions on running longer mains in USA and Europe?

Pluses.
More tracktime.
Motors and batteries would run cooler.

Minuses.
Races would take longer to run.

My biggest Minus...

I can't concentrate for 8 mins! My one expereince with 12th scale was very strange on my concentration...

Personally, I think 5 minutes just "works" as a race format. I know that with the high-capacity cells we could go longer. But why bother?

Also, remember that at club level, a lot of drivers don't have the cells or the skills to run for 8 minutes.

personally id rather have it the way it is - 5 min races. i think its what adds to the appeal of ep touring car racing. full on speed from the get go - a sprint race! slack off a bit and you'll surely find someone on your rear fender fighting to get past you. i know with the higher capacity cells we have now we can run longer races but i'd rather have that extra capacity for us to run faster rather than longer.

besides there's always 12th scale if you want to run 8 min ep races. (man i miss running 12th!)

.... just my preference.

I think it should be kept at 5mins.The extra 3 min of run will heat the motor very badly.

But maybe we could up it to 6 mins??

i race mod using 7-9 turn motors, and i just make runtime in 5mins.
without any backing by cel matchers, how can us 'privateers' last 8 mins using them motors?
id love to race for longer, but id prob just manage it on a 12 turn.

This thing runs for 20 minutes at mod speeds. Weighs 425 grams. To get longer races without it being a battery war we must start using new technology.

Battery is an 830mHa 7.2 Lith, you could easily double or triple the capacity without seriously effecting the weight of the car.

I say we start doing 1 hour mains!

Well actually I saw a few other comments about 1/12 so.....

Depending the cell arangment in your car, they make specific "car" packs of lithuim cells, I think you can get one that is a bit bigger height wise but has 8000 mAh. And they hold the 7.4 for along time under load, no punch loss. With a brushless system you should get about 15-20 minutes.

well 1/12th already runs 8mins so y would this topic be asking about 1/12th?
so for touring cars, lipo wont be much good for mods, the amount of current they can dump is not enough and will overheat, anyone confirm?
plus they are not legal for touring cars.
have you tested these 8000mah batterys?with a 7-8 turn motor?in race conditions?in a touring car?

5 minutes is still enough I think. Otherwise a race day would take too much time if it is in 1 day with 3 qual., 2 finals.

And now you don't have too worry about getting dumped with GP3700's in 5 minutes. Now you can get the maximum out of your battery packs and motor, because it's only 5 minutes. I like it that way.

I agree, but only with 12 turn limit wich we already have in europe. Otherwise it would become to expensive for the average racer.

Maybe it should be something to be done by litle steps (ie: 6 min now, 7 min when batteries go to 4000+, 8 min at 4300+)

Good points, by using a litium battery big enough to supply current for a low mod motor you would need the bigger 8000mAh pack. I ran with the Novak 5800 with a 4000mAh pack and worked great, but as the battery location was the side of the car, the balance was off. So your car might need a central or slit pack to balance properly.

Most average Lith at this time can dump 10C so for the 8000mAh pack you could get 80 amps from it.

Some new liths can dump as high as 20C, now there you could use the 4000 pack, lose about 6oz and probably run for 10 minutes, make it an 8 minute race so there is no battery war.
