Default DIY timing system

Anyone got ideas for a easy to setup diy timing system for one car on a track? I have used some free software developed for slot cars and a light gate with success, the gate was a bit painfull to setup though.

Any ideas?

Easy lap timer, it uses a web cam and can even do multiple cars based on their color. There's a similar one for Android phones but I forget it's name, and I beleive cannot differentiate vehicles.

Sorry, I cannot post any links yet.
