To be fair and from what I have heard - the TOP car was used to secure TQ (rounds 1-4) and the Awesomatix used in the main of 17.5. Cory and EA both ran into a little trouble early on in the A-main but were able to battle back to 2nd and 3rd with EA about .6 away from another lap which would probably but him around 2-3 seconds back from Larry who was on cruise control. Grats to Larry who drove really well regardless of chassis.

In round 4 Larry ran the Awesomatix too but missed resetting tq by less than 1 sec.

Overall.. A great weekend for our shaft drive cars...

Round 4 was the first pack of 17.5 I had run on that car. And with No warmup laps being instituted I was not familiar with what the car was going to do with the 17.5 so my first couple laps were slow. Had I gotten any practice with the car in 17.5 prior to that round I would of for sure gone faster than my Tq. .071 difference and zero laps on that car in stock all weekend up to that point. I ran the Shaft car on sunday because I tried them both in the morning and the track was slightly changed and the Awesomatix was absolutely amazing on Sunday and clearly the correct choice for both classes. It was one of the best cars I have ever driven on Sunday. Plus I thought the super free drive train could take another tooth and I wanted to get out to a lead and then cruise. My plan worked. I was also nervous that someone was going to complain because the TOP car I was running wasnt a production car. You know how people look for reasons to complain if they get beat not saying that would of happened. I wanted to avoid any possibility of that.

4th Round Awesomatix - Larry Fairtrace 1 28 5:02.988 10.570
3rd Round Top EX2 - Larry Fairtrace 3 28 5:02.917 10.660

Congratulations Larry, I haven't seen any video yet but the reports are outstanding.

What most don't seem to comprehend that have commented in this thread is how this car can make a good driver faster by a tenth or more. The other piece most don't understand is it's not the shaft drive part of the car that makes it faster is the suspension design and lower CG that makes this car so good.

I wouldn't go and say all that. This is a multiple day race and with oval racing in between TC rounds. Its really hard to say what is faster and what is not under these circumstances. The track never really feels the same. But one thing i can say is that I was able to pull more teeth and the car felt faster out of the corner to me. I had been driving a belt car in stock all weekend and when I threw the Awesomatix down for the 4th round I geared it very close to what i was running on the Top (Belt) car. Which was already a tooth higher than Hanulec. I went up more for the main.

I wanted to win both TC Classes very badly and thought that I had a good chance. Both cars were VERY good in their respective classes this weekend. Sunday morning I ran the TOP car in 17.5 and the Awesomatix in 13.5 and the Shaft car was crazy good. Best either of the cars had felt all weekend. At that point the choice was made. Awesomatix in both classes.

I also don't believe that its advantage is the shaft drive, that's just a convenient topic when talking about what makes it different.

Obviously we don't need to change the classes, and I'm not trying to sound like a commercial for the Awesomatix. But to anybody that's paying attention and being honest, the car has absolutely shifted the balance of stock racing and is changing the game. Check out Art's article on Cambergain for his thoughts as well.

Will other manufacturers respond? Will someone purpose build a car for stock racing to try and compete? It's a very interesting time for stock racing, and for once nobody can't point and say "I told you so" like we saw with LiPo and brushless and speed control timing. This is genuine, old-fashioned engineering, thinking outside the box, not copying the status quo touring car design and shaking up racing in a way we haven't seen since the Ladgraff cars smashed dirt oval in the mid 80's.
Interestingly, I just recently came across some original AE TC3 trade show materials (so old that the car is represented in CAD drawings) and on the main features was the "Super Efficient Shaft Drive" which delivered "longer run times, more acceleration, and higher top speeds than belt drive systems".

I don't think it is a secret that shaft is better than belt in terms of efficiency but at some point the chassis could no longer keep up with the increasing power output created by motors and ESCs.

It seems that Awesomatix has been able to solve this problem with good solid engineering.

I loved that old TC3!

I think it's pretty telling that Larry felt like he could get away with more gear than the other guys in 17.5 at Snowbirds. I have to run more drag brake in the car than a belt car to get it to slow down entering corners the way I like.

The floating front gear box design definitely feels smoother exiting the corners than the original did. I believe its primary goal was to eliminate the torque steer effects. I haven't tried it in 13.5 or mod yet, but I feel like it's better in 17.5 even. It's definitely an interesting approach.

When I ran mod at Cleveland with the then newly released TC3 (so new that the arms didn't even have droop screws yet! ) the torque steer was so phenomenally bad that I had to do all sorts of horrible things to the chassis setup and radio settings to get it around the track safely.

SO....to see the Awesomespandex in action at the 'birds without a hint of torque-steer related issue really made me sit up and take a closer look at the ruski-mobile! I will watch intently at its development as more racers spend time behind the wheel.

Cyrul showed me the floating front gear box, and that alone I thought was quite the innovation. To see how it absorbs the torque steer and allows the chassis not to bow from the torque. When I saw it I thought,"Holy Crap! We are all going back to shaft." It may not really play out that way, but thats what I thought.

Have you run a TC4 or seen them on the track with brushless motors?

You wont see a hint of torque steer there either.
