Default Tamiya TRF417v5 or TRF418???

Hi Guys,

I have a question here on two Tamiya's top notch TRF touring cars; i.e. Tamiya TRF417v5 and TRF418.

After the release of Tamiya TRF418, the price of TRF417v5 has dropped. Currently, TRF418 is selling at $750 and TRF417v5 is going for $500 (33.3% lesser).

I'm not the kind who will go after the latest car but I understand that the new TRF418 is very different from TRF417v5 in terms of design. There are people who said that the new TRF418's design is very similar to Yokomo BD7 and Tamiya copied most of the DB7 design.

My questions are:

1. Is it worth the extra $250 to get the latest car?
2. Is the TRF418's design and performance better than TRF417v5?
3. Looking from TRF417v5's pictures, I notice that the front bumper part looks like carbon fiber material. Is it really the case as I have seen XRay T4 and BD7's bumper part made of plastic.

I believe that sometimes it's not the newest car will perform better than its predecessor. It's just the company who wants to stay competitive in the market and made some changes (over that one year) just to meet the car release timeline and market the new car out. The new car may not allow the driver to unleash his best performance while its predecessor can.

Please provide me with your advice and thank you.

I can get the 418 from Forum sponsor Banzai Hobbies for the same price as the 417, both of them under $500.

My friend is TRF fan, he said us that he will not follow to buy 418 but keeping V5 to run on our tight and technical track.
In fact he thinks 418 is just for large and high speed tracks

Makes sense if Tamiya really did copy the BD7. Everyone says the BD7 is a monster on asphalt, but not nearly as good on carpet.

I've heard the opposite (actually its still a good asphalt car too). Ronald Volker has done extremely well on carpet with the BD7.

And not to mention about the international shipping fee. :-)
