Default Xray T3 (1st gen) gearing help

Hi everyone, I have a 1st generation xray t3, and I run it in 21.5 blinky. My problem is that I find it hard to use small spur gears and its hard to get the pinion gears to reach as there is limited movement for the motor to move back and forth. Im currently running a 65t spur and a 38t pinion which puts the ratio at about 3.18 from memory. Do any of you guys have any ideas, solutions, modifications that I could use? I need to get my gear ratio down to 3.0.

Bigger pinion to reach?

How big is the track you're running at? 3.0 sees awfully aggressive for 21.5.

I agree with you that is awefully aggresive I run 21.5 on a track that has
120' straight and it is pretty wide an flowing. I run between 3.8-4.2. I race a T3 12 and it is prettty fast!

Hi, the tracks I run on are about a medium size, plus I use 2 much more racing high rpm fans and I have locked timing. The motor gets fairly warm but not hot. (I live in a cold climate). I've heard of guys running as low as 2.8!!

You sure you wanna get down to 3.0? I run a t3 in VTA with a 25.5 Novak. It has a 100 tooth 64p and 55t pinion the FDR is about 3.45. The motor comes off at about 80 ish. If you have apple or android you can get a app called pinion calc. It's very handy.

Yeah I have a "gear app" on my phone. it's pretty good, I guess i'll just have to do some testing. When it was at 3.86 the motor temp was about 96. I'm not too sure what i'll do.

Hey gav with the gears you have on it I'm pretty sure your at 2.90:1. Thats about what i had my 21.5 gens ace when i was running it and i had slight motor timing too. Just make sure theres no boost at all cause 90 degrees is a bit hot and never really see 21.5 motors come off hot with that gearing

Hey Pat, that was 96 degrees farenheit, which is about 36 degrees Celsius.

I made this gear chart a while ago for my T3 2012 so I would know which gears can actually fit in the car and mate together properly. I think it would be the same for the original T3
