Kraig,

Wil last years FDR of 4.5 for Spec GT stand for this year, or will it be changed since we're going with Tekin instead of Novak?

Would there be a FDR limit if the timing isn't locked on the motors?

It's going to be a race to see who can turn the endbell the farthest on these things. As SpecGT is supposed to be about scale realism, I hope the timing is fixed/marked on the motors when they hand them out and the FDR is set appropriately. If it were me choosing, I would have gone with a 21.5 motor for that class.

This isn't just a race. This is an extremely well-supported six days of r/c car nirvana that is unequaled by any other major event that I know of. There are so many good racers and their setup knowledge usually carries me for several months after the event.

Good times in so many ways. Thanks to Scotty and crew.

Oops! HawaiiBob already said it...LOL

Last year, the timing on the motors was "locked". Entrants in the Spec GT class were not allowed to open the boxes that their motors/esc's came in. That was done by the Novak rep, and he put paint on the screws that needed to be backed out to adjust timing.

Gotcha, I thought the Novaks last year were locked endbell design so no timing change was possible.

I have a Speed Passion 17.5 engraved "IIC 2008". That motor is fixed timing. More fixed timing motors like that would work great.

One more question - since I didn't run Spec GT last year, what is the deal with the handout system? You hand it back after? I thought I heard with the Novak system you had to give it back or pay like $40 if I remember right?

You can give it back or they will sell it to you at some reduced price. Seeing this is a Tekin it won't be $40. My guess would be around $100-$150.

This ESC only is selling for about $150 and motors around $80.

I didn't race the spec class last year but I recall hearing it would cost $70 not $40 to buy the handout motor and ESC.

I'm considering running it this year. I need a second class.

Lipo sacks are required...they do check voltage at tech right before you go on track...outside of that I'm not sure.

How slow should the Spec GT class be and what is the best setup to get there and provide equal speed?

Spec mode in esc and set motor timing is decent, but there is always some variance in true sensor positions and the indicator marks on the can unless each motor is actually measured.

Another option is our dual mode where we start with sensors but run sensorless. This eliminates the sensors completely and assures all the motors have the exact same amount of timing. With a FDR limit you can literally set any speed and have all cars be very equal. IE if you want 17.5 speed use 4.0, if you want 21.5 speed use 5.0 FDR.

Just an idea worth considering for ‘true spec’ classes and a way to slow things down other than hitting the limit where a slower motor melts. Pending the FDR the motors could literally be not much more than room temp at the end of the run and provide consistent and equal speed for all the racers.
