question for Charlie or other novak tech(s).....several of the guys at our local track in Maryland are planning to switch over to 10.5 brushless systems for 1/12th scale club racing comparable in speed to the brushed 19 turns that we ran last season. I see that Novak now offers two brushless speedos without heat sink made special for 4 cell racing. My question....what's the functional difference between the normal 4 cell speedo and the one for spectrum equipped cars? I don't have spektrum yet, but plan to get it at some point after making the switch first to brushless (can't afford everything at once). Need some help to figure out which system to order and why.

Vafactor,

Both the Spread Spectrum and the Standard versions of the 4 Cell GTB have all the same programability and functionality.

The Spread Spectrum units generally tend to run a little cooler and sometimes people feel that the throttle response is a little smoother as well.

so I realize that a major selling pont of BL sytems is the "low-maintnence" aspect, but I'm wondering what sort of day-to-day or "after-race" maintnenece is recommended? Cleaning the motor with motor-spray?, jsut blowing it out/off with compressed air? anything else? What do you BL guys do?

and whats the diffeerence between the standard GTB and the 4-cell GTB model? Can I run my standard GTB/13.5 combo in my 1/12 scale with a 4-cell pack?

Default Punchy Profile ??

Hey guys,

I have GTB with 13.5 SS (sintered). It's got lots of speed however, some of the other 13.5 runners have more torque / punch - our rollout is the same so it seems overgearing is ruled outed.

I am using the default profile (number 1), is there a 'punchier' setting that I can use ?

Cheers

There really isn't much maintenance for the BL motors. Just check them every few raceweekends for stuff in the motor (normally just foam or dust) and oil the bearings. Compressed air may be useful but I wouldn't use motor spray on the motor.

If you drop a rotor in the dirt, it can pick up all kinds of little magnetic dusties. The best way I've found to clean this off is the cleaning putty that the gas guys use.

Yes, you can use the regular GTB in 12th. It's a tight fit under the body but it works fine on 4 cells.

Can anyone explain to a newer guy like me how the brushless system works, and if it's allowed in stock racing? Is it a just a track to track type of thing where the owners decide what to run, or is it approved by ROAR? Thanks for any help.

you can tell the 13.5 is sintered if it got the orange timing ring. also there should be cogging with the sintered rotor

novak recomends pinion 2-3teeth higher than a 27T stock motor. which probably means you can do 3-6 teeth higher.

anywhere from a 4.3 to a 4.7 depending on how well your car is working

For the higher wind motors (13.5 and 10.5) it's pretty hard to give an exact "startingpoint" because these things have a huge window where they work. From what I've seen you can go 3 teeth up or down and not have a huge change in performance.

Locally, we're gearing for laptimes only. We don't run the motors at a specific temp or anything like that. It's all aout the laptimes and experimenting. For a first time startingpoint, just use the recommendations from Novak (instructions or website).

Most people I have spoken to say between 4.5 and 5 is about where you need to be at. Obviously it depends on what sort of track you are on, but probably a good place to start
