Default Been out of the loop for awhile, thinking of trying on-road

I was on here years ago and I dabbled with 1/18th scale off-road a bit, owning a Tamiya Tamtech Hornet, then a RC-18B2, then a RC18B/r which I preferred over the belt drive B2.

I find I like building and tinkering more than bashing around and breaking stuff, so i'd like to get a good versatile on-road car that fits a wide range of nice scale bodies. For nice bodies Tamiya seems the obvious choice, but I know 1:10 on-road is pretty universal in terms of body swapping so not sure if I should consider a tamiya chassis.

I was looking into TT-01/02 and TA-03 chassis, or an Associated TC4 due to their popularity, cheap price and easy to find upgrades.

Most notably, I want a car that can fit this body http://deltaplastikusa.com/10th-scal...le-rc-ls-200mm because damn near nobody makes a nice Lancia Stratos body, and the only one out there before was for HPI mini's. This one is nice too http://www.asiatees.com/display?Misc...id=94533&pid=1

Other bodies I'd interested in that might limit selection is the Tamiya Mazda 787B, which is really low in front, so I'm a bit concerned about front shock towers getting in the way, I know the TA-03 does not have this issue.

Anyways, just seeing what people throw out, or if anyone has experience with any of these bodies and would know how accepting they are. I know the motto is "buy the best, don't spend money upgrading" but as this will be more shelf queen than racer, I want maximum long haul tinkering and upgrading more than out of the box racing.

I do plan to go brushless, but probably not any sort of crazy speed run setups.

When you look around for a chassis, make sure to check the width and wheelbase. For example, a TC4 (and most touring car type chassis) are 190mm wide.

For 190mm wide and low profile, take a look at the Tamiya F103GT chassis.

Looks like the Deltaplastik shell is 200mm wide, the one from Asiatees is 195mm, so I should be ok with basic touring car chassis with maybe some different rims.

I assume the Tamiya F103gt isn't going to be any good if I wanted to be able to set this up as a rally car once in awhile to properly use the rally Stratos body

I would look at a TT02, cheap to run, easy to get spares and you can run it long / short /narrow and wide along with also raising it to run rally if you want to go offroad.

As to Stratos shells, Rally Legends makes them, they are easy to get hold off and they have other classic rally cars like the mighty escort mk2

There are a few other versions of the Stratos available. The best I have found was the Chevron models which is pretty much the same quality as Tamiya and fits the 190mm chassies.

Have you checked out the DF03 RA chassis? Much better quality than the TT02 and properly tunable.

Good to know about Rally Legends. Looks like the detail on the two I posted is better than rally legends, but it's hard to tell from the crappy pictures they provide. Might order a few of them and see. I think I probably trust Rally Legends a bit more, plus they make replica stratos wheels.

the chevron models look pretty nice, know a source to buy them?

Would a DF03 still be able to use standard road shells like the 787B? Also, it's got that weird bottom mounted battery, how well does that work for modern lipos? from my previous experience with Tamiya buggie chassis, lipos never fit properly in there.

The DF03 will not be suitable for onroad shells. The DF03RA is the rally version. You cannot fit square lipos in it.

The XV01 chassis is a great rally chassis but quite pricey, the TT02 is cheaper and still good fun. They both take square lipos but the XV01 is pretty snug compared to the TT02
