New to RC, advice/opinion on projected setup
Hi all!
Was looking to pick up and play around with a RC with some friends. Not necessarily looking to go competition-level, but having a good starting point is something I try to look for. At the moment looking mainly to mess around with drifting, but grip driving is good to have too. Right now, I have the following items queued: TA06 Pro Futaba 3PRKA (FUTK3100) iMax B6 LiPo Charger 2 Turnigy 5000mAh batteries Blue Bird High Torque Servo Speed Passion Reventon R Brushless ESC Speed Passion Drift Series USA 8.5R Brushless Motor How much of this is overkill? Since I'm just starting out, should I opt for one of the base TA06 chassis that come with a body? |
It's usallu cheaper to buy the Pro versions if you plan to upgrade parts later.
I would re-think the 8.5. I don't do drifting but thats a lot of power for a new person. |
So maybe a 4.5 motor would be good enough? I had that chosen in particular since it came as a set with an ESC.. I just know RC drifting requires a lot of torque, but I don't really know what I'm looking at numbers-wise.

No smaller numbers mean more power. Bigger number is less power.
Look for a 17.5 motor to start. It'll have more than enough for drifting while also being the same motor you can run in a stock blinky sedan class. Look at the Turnigy Trackstar motors. Fantastic value and every bit as good as $90 motors. Also look into Hobbywing escs. Low cost and reliable. |
Thanks for all the info!
I found another Speed Passion combo pack, "Reventon Stock Club Race" with a Competition V3 17.5R for ~110. Not trying to not take your advice about motor/esc, but like I said, I'm not really sure what I'm looking at. Truthfully, the set just sounds more combatable to my untrained knowledge :/ Any particular motor/esc through Turnigy and Hobbywing? |
Figure I'd throw in that I'm searching for all of this via Ebay.
