Whats the diff?
would roller have more maintance?

The problem with the roller diff is they didn't taper the rollers and diff rings to make the outside of the roller keep up with the inside...the same reason why we have differentials in the first place. I think if they could find a way to do that then the roller would probably be the best diff out there. But that's not such an easy thing to do in the hardness needed for the stresses of a differentials.

A tapered roller bearing isn't that hard to do. But it would cost more money. It would also have more friction than a ball diff because of more surface area in contact with the rings. Only reason to use a roller bearing would be to handle a higher load. And thats just not needed in RC diffs.

More contact area does increase friction if you are dealing with the same pressure applied. That is not the case here though....with more contact area you can use less tension to decrease friction and increase differential life. That is why both CRC and Xenon went to a 16 ball diff gear. More diff balls = more friction = less tension needed = smoother diff. The same would hold true for a roller diff plus you would have less issues with diff balls flat spotting and diff rings grooving.
