LRP guys should use 90nm plus SOI manufacture on brushless chip. I'm sure it will require no heatsink if you go 90nm, but will cost LOTS $$$.

Sphere using 0.13um right? Or even older dinosaur 0.15um?

Doing all that switching requires more FETs... My understanding that the number of FETs in use at any given time are basicly double the number nessasary in a brushed controler. This doubles the resistance as well...

Given the same amount of current... increasing resistance, typicaly also increases the amount of heat generated by these types of devices.

There may indeed also be increased heat do to the switching on and off, but thats not the only thing creating more heat.

The Sphere itself is 15.0mm high, the heatsink (which is most of the time needed for TC applications and pretty sure for 4wd Off-Road too) adds another 11mm on top. There's unfortunately no way to get away without a heatsink in extreme conditions, brushless stuff is just too hot...


burito / Reto - Wow.... that's definitely Unfortunate! I like many others were looking forward to a heatsink-less ESC for LRP's Brushless System! With the heatsink on it... it doesn't look much different with that of Novak's.... which would now also have similar dimensions as well. This really was the one drawback of the entire System.... the size (and height) of the ESC.....after the heating problems had been worked out of course. I'm sure in time the size will get smaller with newer and more adaptable technology. Maybe ultra mini-fans can be somehow installed on or inside the ESC to keep the temps down....?!

I think I'm going to get the LRP Quantum Competition 2 until the Sphere comes out. I haven't run brushed motors in about 3 years though.

One very encouraging sign that they might be out very soon is that ASSOCIATED'S own website no longer has the notice mentioning the release date delay for both the Sphere and NEO-ONE!
