I'm using a 3 Racing Lathe with ball bearings. It works great and it's cheap. What you need to buy is a lathe motor and you're ready to go.

The difference between the ball bearing and the V block is actually on the armature holder. One is in the shape of V and the other is with 2 bearing side by side so that the armature rotates on them while being cut.

You should normally always stick with V blocks. Bearings can develop slop after a while and make the lathe cut out of round. Just the Hardened V blocks with some light oil on them is dialed.
