Hey guys, just wanted say hello to everyone, i'm a newbie. i just bought a TF-5 shaft drive as my first TC car. i own a Lazer SP and love it so much, i decided to try the TF-5! before you guys bash me about the "search button" i just wanted to say i did use it and i still could'nt find an answer. it actually got me more confused! well my problem is about gearing. according to the manual my gear ratio is 2.5:1. i know your suppose to divide spur/pinion x gear ratio = F.D.R. but thats where i get lost. i dont know what FDR is suppose to represent or what i use it for. i will be running 2 motors, a 10.5 and 13.5 Speed Passion v3 brushless motor. i am so confused what pinion gears to use. i will be buying on-line so i cant physically experiment what works for me. i just want a basic setup. i tried looking at everyones setup sheets but no one runs a 96t spur gear. everyone runs 100 and up. is there a reason why? for now i just want to stick to stock settings so i can practice and get the hang of it. i will be practicing on the streets until i build enough confidence to go to the local track. it is a small tight track with no straight aways, just twists and turns. any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What ESC you are running will determine what FDR you are looking for. If your running the SP with the newest firmware you will need to ask what people are shooting for in FDR with a 10.5 and a 13.5. It is just a ratio to figure out what gearing you should be running. For every full turn on the motor turns the the wheels on the car x amount of times.

I'd imagine something around a 5.5 or 6 to start with using the turbo firmware.

Then just plug in the numbers to get desired FDR. On my TF5 I'm running VTA so 4.3 is the lowest FDR your supposed to run.

I believer I have, spur 76 / pinion 39 x internal ratio 2.5 = 4.8 FDR.
If I wanted to go lower 76/42x2.5=4.5

Now if your running foam tires you need to figure gearing out as rollout and you have to measure the diameter of the tires.

Scrad, thanks for the help. i am running rubber tires and using the Futaba MC950CR esc. i was just on amainhobbies getting ready to order pinion gears 31 all the way to 43(odd numbers) because i thought no one would help me! so you say 5.5 to 6 just to start. does is that for both motors, 10.5 & 13.5? what set of pinion gears would you recommend me purchasing? Thanks.

Hi,
I'm running the SD and am struggling to find spur gears. I use the 48 pitch ones. Which other manufacturers spur gears will fit ?
Thanks,

I use the black kimbrough spurs and pinions. But robinson pinions work fine too.

bomber9, I really don't know what fdr you need with the futaba. I ran a 4.6 with my GTB and with a 17.5, but that esc doesn't have the turbo function. You need to find a FDR recommendation for guys that run the futaba.

I said 5.5 or so with the Speed Passion ESC, but that one has a turbo function. I would think starting around a 6 fdr would be ok and then adjust from there.

Default tf5 readyset questions

Hello there!

I need your help. I have the TF5 shaft driven Readyset.
It has front/rear ball diffs, but i want to use a front spool. If i order the TFW051 Aluminium Spool Shaft what else should i change? Are there any instructions for mounting it to my TF5?
A few months ago i bought TF006-4 Knuckle & Hub Carrier instead of LA-231-02 and i discovered that there are a lot of other parts that need to be changed. Can someone which parts are these? After fitting the TF006-4 the universals move in-out 2-3mm thus narrowing-widening the front.

Thanks in advance!

You should probably get another bevel gear set for the spool and the pin cushions for the dog bones have to be used on the aluminum spool.

Hello fellow TF5ers!

I was wondering about Gear ratio. I use a 5.5T 60a ezrun with an FDR of 8.125.
I run it on a fairly technical track. 78spur/24pinion. Kinda overheats after awhile.

Shall i try the 96s/32p? I will get 7.5 FDR.

Anyone know the stock FDR with the 20t motor?

Thanks in advance.
