What parts are needed to keep racing? Are these cars durable?

The current AE T6 price offering makes it fairly tough to buy a more complete and competitive car. I go with the AE TC6...if you end up liking on road it can and will keep you competitive without having to change chassis.

Once you really like on-road and in the mix......get a TRF 417X WE

The by the time you have all the upgrades necessary to get the Saukura S fast and durable you will be at the price of the Spec-R R1.

A used Xray will cost more than the Spec-R R1.

The TC4 is garbage unless you are racing in a very controlled class like VTA. The TC4 was not even competitive when it was new. Associated did not have a competitive car until the TC6 was released.

If AE is selling the TC6.1FT for $250 online that is a great deal. It is a great car and has excellent, low cost parts support. It is also very popular so setup help is easy.

If I were in the market for a new sedan I would get the Spec-R R1. Spec-R took the best of every sedan on the market and put it together in one kit. It would still be a good deal if it was selling for $500.

+1
And you will be able to get parts everywhere for an AE or Tamiya.( the awful truth is your going to break things when racing, your fault or not).

?
Why wasn't it competitive?
And why was it "garbage"?
I bet I know the answer but I'm curious.

Because very talented AE drivers that were winning races with the TC3 the season before were immediately not competitive with the TC4. I was attending a lot of big races the year it came out and quite a few AE factory drivers at the time are good friends of mine. They were all too professional to blame the car but it was very evident there was a lot of concern about the TC4 platform and exactly how AE had lost its way during its development. The car did not handle well and its internal gear ratio was too high (2.5:1) so high rpm harmonic issues plagued the drive system. Actually, the belt cars had the same problem but new drive pulleys and belts that let the drive ratio dip below 2:1 for most cars solved the problem.

I think AE was a little cocky after the success of the TC3 (it was truly outstanding in its time) and developed the TC4 without looking at what everyone else was doing. Everyone (Xray, HB, Yokomo,etc...) else bought Tamiyas and started copying them.

The TC5 was a step in the right direction but not enough steps to get it on par with the Tamiya 415/416 which were the gold standards for sedans at the time.

The TC6/6.1 was the evolution that got AE competitive again. That said, I think the bar has recently been raised again by the Yokomo BD7 and EVERYONE is playing catch up now.

The VBC Wildfire (http://www.teamcrc.com/crc/modules.p...prodID=7719297) is becoming a very popular TC. Price is reasonable under $400 and the car looks really good on the track. This car was 4th at IIC in 13.5 TC this year in the hands of Andrew Knapp.

You can't beat a TC6.1 for $250. You are getting a pro level car at an entry level price.
