Nascar in RC?
I was just wondering if anyone was actually intersted in Nascar in RC. It seems cool to me as you can get a kind of simulation race with stock cars and pit stops. More like a nascar oval endurance race. I don't know about any bodies or chassis designed for this kind of race though, besides maybe toy grade.

There is actually a very large following of this. Theres a section of this site called oval and larger scale where you can get more info. But the gist is oval pan cars, and usually runing protoform oval bodies or mcallister oval bodies.

Windtunnel Racing. Regards Norman |
Protoform, Windtunnel, and McAllister all make oval bodies. At the Snowbirds they run an oval endurance race (Not sure if they still do) Where pit stops had to be done to change batteries etc.

That race at the birds hasn't been done for a long time. They do a figer 8 race now that looks fun.

I actually worked in NASCAR in Charlotte in the early 90's and lots of crew members would race RC in their spare time. You would be amazed at the big NASCAR names that played with toy cars. Some of use even got chastised for getting more serious about our toy cars than the day job. I remember a lot of full size racing companies even getting into RC for a while. Longacre scales even made an rc version briefly! A certain driver in NASCAR even went on to buy a RC car company. I was at a ROAR Nationals a few years back when a relatively well known driver (that frequents this group) was flying from back and forth from the Nats to a big NASCAR race. Some of the big boys love RC because you get to be the driver, owner, crew chief, engineer, engine guy, and mechanic- all yourself. The big teams have so much specialization you are kind of just a cog in a wheel. Not so in RC racing. |
Not sure if he still does, but Tony Stewart owns Custom Works. One of the leading companies in Dirt Oval R/C and he would show up to some of the races and do pretty good for a guy that doesnt do rc fulltime.

Every year a few nascar people show up at Snowbirds in FL Last years winner David Mayhew drove for KBM in the 18 Truck 1 or 2 races

Here's a link to a hobby shop that specializes in oval racing.
http://www.lefthander-rc.com So not my thing, but some people really like it. It actually makes me feel really nauseous just watching an oval race. Probably a good thing oval died in my area. Having a marshall puke on the track probably isn't good for traction. :p |
